BMW X3 Stalling: Quick Fix or Fuel System Issue?

Check engine light on

|

Stalling while idling

Fault stored

Hey all! Need some advice about my 2013 BMW X3 (122k km). The check engine light triggered recently, and the engine keeps stalling when idling. Got the error code read, and I'm suspecting it might be fuel-related. Had a not-so-great experience with my previous mechanic, so I'm a bit hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their X3? Really interested in hearing about your experiences and if you can recommend a reliable mechanic who's good with BMWs. Thanks!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2010 BMW X5 last year. The symptoms you're describing match what I experienced, stalling at idle and CEL. In my case, it turned out to be a faulty fuel pump control module with damaged wiring connections. The cable insulation had worn out, causing intermittent connection issues. The repair involved replacing the control module and rewiring the connection to the fuel pump. Not a super serious issue, but definitely needed prompt attention to prevent potential fuel system damage. The symptoms cleared up right after the fix. Haven't had any issues since then. Would suggest getting it checked soon though, as fuel system problems can sometimes get worse if left unattended. The car's been running smooth after the repair. Best of luck with yours.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Been a few months since I fixed my X3, and what you described sounds exactly like what I went through. Do you remember roughly how much you paid for the repair? Also, just curious, did any other issues pop up after fixing the fuel pump module? Mine's been running fine so far, but always good to know what to watch out for with these cars.

Hey again! Glad to help! Yeah, after seeing the mechanic, they found it was indeed an issue with the fuel pump control module, just like yours. The main culprit was a faulty cable connection, which they fixed for 95 Euro. Pretty reasonable, considering what these repairs can sometimes cost! Since getting it sorted, my X5's been running like a dream, no more stalling or check engine lights. The mechanic mentioned the incorrect fuel composition was adding to the problem, but once that worked its way through the system and they fixed the wiring, everything went back to normal. I've put about 15,000 km on it since the repair without any related issues popping up. These BMWs are pretty solid once you get the fuel system running right. Just keep an eye on your fuel quality and you should be good to go. Amazing how such a small wiring issue can cause such annoying problems, right? Feel free to hit me up if anything else comes up with yours!

Thanks so much for the detailed info! Yeah, I totally get what you mean about the small issues causing big headaches. I actually went ahead and got mine fixed last week. Funny enough, my repair bill was pretty close to yours, around 100 Euro for the whole thing. The mechanic I found was really straightforward about the problem and fixed it right up. You're spot on about the fuel quality too. I've switched to premium fuel since then, and the car's running way better. No more stalling, and that annoying check engine light hasn't come back. It's such a relief! I've put about 2,000 km on it since the repair, and everything's working perfectly. Really appreciate your help with this. It's good to know I'm not the only one who's dealt with these quirky fuel system issues. Think I'll stick with this new mechanic, they really knew their stuff with BMWs. Thanks again for sharing your experience!
