BMW X3 Sluggish + Check Engine: Is Your MAP Sensor Bad?

Loss of engine power

Longer cold start time

Check engine light on

Poor fuel economy

Hi everyone! Need some advice about my 2011 BMW X3 (gas engine, 17847 KM). My check engine light is on and the car feels sluggish with terrible fuel economy. I suspect it might be the manifold pressure sensor, but I'm hesitant to go back to my mechanic after a previous bad experience. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair cost? Thanks in advance for any help!

Had the exact same symptoms on my 2014 BMW X5 35i last month. The sluggish performance and poor fuel economy were really noticeable. My mechanic found a significant vacuum leak at the intake manifold gasket. The rubber had deteriorated badly, causing the engine to run rich to compensate for the unmetered air. The check engine light was definitely related to the manifold pressure readings being off. The fix wasn't just a sensor, they had to replace the intake manifold gasket and some connecting hoses. It was a serious issue that needed immediate attention since it was affecting engine performance and could've led to more problems. Would recommend getting it checked soon rather than waiting. Hope this helps with your decision. Let us know what you find out.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. I'm glad you mentioned the vacuum leak because I was too focused on just the sensor being the problem. I should probably stop putting this off and get it properly checked out. By the way, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the repair? And has everything been running smoothly since they fixed it?

Hey there! Thanks for asking about the follow-up. Yeah, everything's been running perfectly since I got it sorted out. I actually just had it fixed last week, turned out it was indeed a faulty manifold pressure sensor, just like we suspected. The mechanic found a pretty significant vacuum leak that needed fixing too. The total came to 235 € for the whole job, which included fixing that large vacuum leakage. Not as bad as I was expecting, to be honest! The car's running like a dream now, no more sluggish performance, and my fuel economy is back to normal. It's such a relief to have it sorted. My X5 feels like a completely different car now, responsive, smooth, and that annoying check engine light is finally gone. Honestly wish I'd done it sooner instead of waiting around worrying about it. Take my advice, don't put it off like I did initially. The peace of mind is totally worth it, and you'll save money on fuel in the long run too. Let me know how it goes when you get yours checked out!

Just wanted to update everyone, I finally took my car to a new mechanic yesterday! The experience was completely different from my last one. You were spot on about the vacuum leak. Turned out I had multiple issues, a torn vacuum hose and a faulty sensor. Got it all fixed up in one go. The repair cost was actually reasonable, around 280 € total for parts and labor. The mechanic was super transparent and even showed me the worn-out parts. Can't believe what a difference it's made, my X3 is running so much better now! The sluggishness is gone, and I can already tell the fuel economy has improved. Really appreciate everyone's advice, especially about not waiting too long to get it checked. You definitely saved me from bigger problems down the road. Feels great to have this sorted out finally. Thanks again for helping me make the right decision!

Let our mechanics help you!
