Thanks for sharing your experience, it's really helpful to hear about that wiring harness issue since my symptoms match up perfectly with what you described. The corrosion explanation makes total sense given the age of these cars. Would you mind letting me know roughly how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also curious if you've had any other electrical gremlins pop up since they fixed it?
Hey there! Just wanted to follow up about that repair cost you asked about. After taking my X5 to the mechanic, it turned out to be much simpler (and cheaper!) than I expected. The defective turn signal was actually just a bad cable connection, got that sorted for 95 €. Such a relief! Everything's working perfectly now, turn signals are responding like they should, and I haven't had any other electrical issues pop up since the fix. My dashboard is finally error-free! It's amazing how something as small as a faulty connection can cause so many warning lights to go crazy. I was actually worried it might be something major with the wiring harness, but nope, just needed that one connection fixed. I'd say you're probably looking at a similar issue with your X3. These BMWs can be finicky with their electronics, but once you get them sorted, they're usually good to go for a long while. Let me know if you end up getting yours checked out, would be interesting to hear if it's the same problem!
Thanks for the update! I actually just got mine fixed yesterday and you're right, it was a pretty straightforward fix. My mechanic found a similar cable issue but also had to replace a corroded ground wire. Cost me about 150 bucks total, which wasn't too bad considering how worried I was initially. The funny part was watching the mechanic's face when he discovered the problem. He was like "Oh, these BMWs always try to make simple problems look complicated!" He showed me the corroded parts, and honestly, it looked pretty nasty. But after cleaning everything up and replacing the bad parts, my car's running like a charm. All the warning lights are gone, turn signals are working perfectly, and those weird purple headlights are back to their normal white color. Such a relief! Really glad I didn't put this repair off any longer. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it really helped me feel more confident about getting it checked out!
I had similar issues with my 2012 BMW X5 last month. The symptoms were nearly identical, dashboard errors, turn signal problems, and those weird purple xenon lights. Took it to the garage and it turned out to be a faulty wiring harness connector near the headlight assembly. The connection had corroded over time and was causing intermittent electrical issues. There was also a damaged ground wire that needed replacing. Not a catastrophic problem, but definitely needed professional attention since it involved the car's electrical system. The mechanic showed me how some pins in the connector were badly corroded. They had to replace the entire harness connector and re-route a few wires. The fix took about half a day. The xenon lights went back to normal white, and all the warning lights disappeared. Turn signals work perfectly now. You'll definitely want someone who knows BMW electronics for this kind of work.
