BMW X3 Injector Issues: Poor Performance & High Fuel Use

Stalling while idling

Loss of engine power

Poor fuel economy

Unsteady engine

Engine hard to start

Hey everyone! My 2015 BMW X3 with gas engine has been acting up lately. When running, I notice poor starts, high fuel usage, and significant power loss. The engine idles rough, stalls at idle, and recently failed emissions. I suspect faulty injectors might be the culprit. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their X3? What did your mechanic diagnose and how was it fixed? Would appreciate hearing about your repair experiences. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I've got some experience with cars and had a very similar issue with my 2013 BMW X1 last year. The symptoms you described are exactly what I dealt with on mine. After struggling with it for a few weeks, I took it to my trusted workshop. They ran diagnostics and found that the injection valves were seriously gunked up. Had all of them cleaned professionally, and it cost me around 515 Euro. Made a huge difference, the car runs like new now, no more rough idling or power issues. Before we dig deeper, could you share: How many miles/kilometers are on your X3? Have you had any warning lights on the dash? When was your last fuel system service? This info would help me share more relevant details from my experience. These injection issues are actually pretty common on BMWs from that era.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! My X3 has 130417 KM on the clock, and yes, I've got the check engine light showing up intermittently. Had my last service about 3 months ago but that was just routine maintenance, oil change and filters. Your situation sounds exactly like what I'm experiencing. Good to know the injector cleaning worked out for you. I was honestly worried it might need complete injector replacement which would've been way more expensive. Did you notice any immediate improvement in fuel consumption after the cleaning? I'm burning through fuel like crazy right now and it's getting pretty frustrating.

Hey again! Yeah, I totally get your frustration with the fuel consumption, my X1 was drinking gas like there was no tomorrow before I got it fixed. when you mentioned the check engine light and that mileage, it's like déjà vu of my situation! The fuel consumption improvement after the injector cleaning was actually pretty dramatic. I'd say I was getting about 25-30% better mileage within the first few tanks after the service. It was such a relief not having to fill up so frequently anymore! With your X3 showing the same symptoms at similar mileage, I'm even more convinced it's the injectors. Fun fact, my mechanic actually showed me the gunked-up injectors before cleaning them. They were pretty nasty, all clogged up with carbon deposits. No wonder the engine was struggling! One thing I'd mention though, while you're getting the injectors cleaned, might be worth having them check the fuel pressure regulator too. My mechanic did that as a precaution, and it turned out to be slightly weak. Getting both done at the same time saved me a second trip to the workshop. Would definitely recommend getting it looked at soon, running with dirty injectors too long can cause other issues. Let me know how it goes if you decide to get them cleaned!

Thanks so much for all this detailed info! It's super helpful to hear about your real experience, especially the fuel consumption improvement, that's exactly what I'm hoping for. You've honestly made me feel a lot better about this whole situation. I just called my mechanic and booked the car in for next week. Told him about the injector cleaning and mentioned the fuel pressure regulator check too, he agreed it's worth looking at both. He actually said he sees this issue quite often with BMWs around this age. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and tips. I'll definitely update you once I get it sorted. Fingers crossed it'll be as straightforward as your repair was! Thanks again for helping me avoid what could've been a much more expensive fix if I'd left it too long.

Let our mechanics help you!
