BMW X3 Engine Hesitation and Power Loss: Diagnose & Fix

Hey everyone! My 2020 BMW X3 (gas, 126,797 km) is acting up and I'm worried about taking it to the mechanic after a previous bad experience. The engine's been running rough lately with noticeable power loss and jerking during acceleration. Check engine light is on too. I suspect it might be running lean but I'm not sure. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms with their X3? What was the actual problem and did you find a reliable mechanic to fix it? Thanks in advance for any advice!

I had very similar symptoms with my 2017 BMW X5 last year. The rough running, power loss, and jerking during acceleration turned out to be a faulty fuel injector. Got a warning light too. Had to take it to a certified technician because this isn't something for DIY repair. The diagnostic showed cylinder 3 injector was totally clogged and misfiring. They had to replace the injector and clean the fuel system. It was quite serious since bad injectors can damage other engine components if left unfixed. My advice is don't wait on this, find a certified BMW specialist. These symptoms are classic injector failure signs, and it's not something that fixes itself. The repair took about a day in my case. Since then, my X5 has been running smooth as new. The key is finding a reputable shop that specializes in BMW. Check their certifications and don't just go for the cheapest option. This kind of work needs proper diagnostic tools and expertise.

Thanks for sharing your experience. That sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with! I'm really glad to hear you got it sorted out. Would you mind telling me roughly how much you ended up paying for the injector replacement and cleaning? Also, have you had any other issues pop up since the repair? Just want to know what I might be looking at cost-wise and if this fix really takes care of all the symptoms. My X3 is my daily driver so I want to get this handled properly.

Hey there! Just wanted to follow up about the costs and results. I paid 515 € for the complete fix, this covered replacing the bad injector and cleaning the fuel system. And I've got great news, the repair totally solved all those annoying symptoms I was having. Since getting it fixed about a year ago, my X5 has been running absolutely perfect with no lean condition anymore. It's such a relief not having that jerky acceleration and power loss anymore. The engine runs super smooth now, just like it should. Honestly, while the repair wasn't cheap, it was totally worth every penny to have my car running properly again. I know you mentioned being worried about taking yours to a mechanic, but getting that injector fixed properly really is crucial. A bad injector can cause all sorts of expensive damage if you let it go too long. Trust me, once you get it sorted, you'll notice the difference immediately. Your X3 will feel like a completely different car!

Thanks so much for those details! I actually just got back from the mechanic today. You were spot on, it was indeed a faulty injector. Had a great experience with this new certified BMW specialist I found. They diagnosed it quickly and fixed everything in one day. The final bill came to about 550 € for the injector replacement and system cleaning. A bit steep, but the difference in how my X3 runs now is incredible! No more jerking or power loss, and the check engine light is finally off. The engine purrs like it did when I first got it. Really appreciate everyone's input here. It helped me take action instead of putting it off and risking more damage. I'll definitely be sticking with this mechanic for future service, they were professional and explained everything clearly. What a relief to have this sorted out! Now I can enjoy driving my X3 again without worrying about every little problem.
