Thanks so much for sharing your experience, it's a relief to hear someone else had the same issue! I'm going to check with a BMW specialist asap. By the way, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? And has everything been running smoothly since then, or did you run into any other related problems?

Hey again! Glad to give you an update, I got the EGR valve fixed and it set me back 355 € for the complete job. The mechanic confirmed it was totally clogged and jammed, just like I suspected. Since getting it sorted, my X1's been running like a dream, no more power issues, weird noises, or smoke problems. Fuel consumption is back to normal too, which is a huge relief for my wallet! I can definitely say it was worth every penny. The car feels like new again, and I haven't had a single related issue pop up since the repair. That hissing sound you mentioned? Completely gone. If yours has the same symptoms I had, getting that EGR valve fixed should sort everything out. Let me know how you get on with the BMW specialist. Always good to hear how these things work out for others with similar cars.

Thanks for all the great info! Just wanted to update you on what happened. I took your advice and found a BMW specialist who actually knew their stuff. Got it checked out yesterday, and you were spot on, it was the EGR valve causing all the drama. The mechanic was super thorough and showed me exactly what was wrong. The valve was completely gunked up, even worse than I expected. Ended up getting a full replacement rather than just a cleaning. The whole thing took about 4 hours, and while my wallet's definitely lighter, the difference in how the car runs is like night and day. No more weird hissing, the engine's running smooth again, and that annoying smoke issue is gone. Already noticed the fuel consumption's way better too. Really glad I didn't put this off any longer, you were right about not waiting. The mechanic was actually much better than my old one, explained everything clearly, and did a proper job. Thanks again for helping me figure this out!

Hey there! Dealt with nearly identical symptoms on my 2013 BMW X1 last year. The rough idle, power loss, and that distinctive hissing sound matched my experience perfectly. Got it checked at the garage, and it turned out the EGR valve was completely clogged with carbon deposits and stuck in a partially open position. Had it fixed by cleaning the valve first, but that only worked temporarily. Eventually needed a complete EGR valve replacement along with cleaning of the intake manifold. It was pretty serious since the clogged valve was causing unburned fuel to get into places it shouldn't, which explained the smoke and poor fuel economy. My advice? Don't wait too long on this one. A faulty EGR can lead to bigger engine problems if left unchecked. The repair itself wasn't overly complicated, but you'll want a mechanic who knows BMWs. The whole job took about half a day at the shop. Hope this helps with your decision.
