BMW X2 Trans Issues: Grinding & No Power, Need Help!

Hey all, having serious transmission problems with my 2020 BMW X2 (gasoline). The car barely moves when I press the gas, makes nasty grinding sounds during gear shifts, and both check engine and transmission lights are on. Emergency mode kicked in too. I suspect it's the torque converter lock-up clutch, but want to hear from anyone who's dealt with similar symptoms. Has anyone gotten this fixed? What did your mechanic diagnose and how was it resolved? Any input would be great, especially from those who've been through this before.

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars, and I actually dealt with something very similar on my 2018 BMW X1 last year. When you mentioned those symptoms, it immediately reminded me of what I went through, same transmission issues and warning lights. After limping to my trusted workshop, they diagnosed it as a faulty torque converter. Just like yours, my car was struggling to accelerate and making those awful grinding noises during shifts. The emergency mode was super annoying too. The repair wasn't cheap, set me back about 2120 Euro, but it fixed the problem completely. The whole transmission started working like new again. I also own a BMW X3, and these transmissions are pretty similar across the lineup. Before I share more specifics about my repair process, could you tell me your exact mileage and whether you've noticed any transmission fluid leaks? Also, when did these symptoms first start showing up? This would help me give you more relevant advice based on my experience.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My X2 has 117439 KM on the clock, and I actually just noticed these symptoms a few days ago, right after my latest service. No fluid leaks that I can spot, but those grinding sounds are seriously worrying me. The price you mentioned for the repair sounds rough, but I guess that's what we sign up for with these cars. Did your warranty cover any of the repair costs? Mine's just barely out of the basic warranty period, and I'm hoping BMW might still help out given it's a major transmission issue.

Hey again! Thanks for those details about your X2. Yeah, that mileage is pretty similar to when my issues started, I was around 112000 KM when my transmission started acting up. It's interesting that yours started right after a service though, that's a bit suspicious timing. About the warranty, unfortunately, mine had also just expired when this happened, and BMW wasn't particularly helpful with covering the costs. I tried negotiating with them since it was just outside the warranty period, but no luck there. Had to pay the full amount out of pocket. You know what's weird though? When I first took my X1 in, they actually tried telling me it might just be a transmission fluid issue, but I knew those symptoms were too severe for just that. The grinding noise especially, that's what really convinced me it was the torque converter. These BMW transmissions are usually pretty solid, so when they start making those kinds of noises, it's usually something serious. Have you noticed if the problems are worse when the engine is cold or after it's warmed up? In my case, it was actually worse after the car had been running for a while, which was another telltale sign of the torque converter issue. Just curious if you're experiencing the same pattern.

Thanks for all that detailed info! Yeah, the timing with the service is bugging me too, I'm definitely going to bring that up when I take it in. My symptoms are exactly like yours, worse after the car warms up, which really supports your torque converter theory. I guess I should brace myself for that repair bill then, since it sounds like BMW isn't too flexible with just-expired warranties. It's frustrating because everything was perfect until now. At least I know what I'm likely dealing with thanks to your experience. Think I'll go ahead and book it in tomorrow, can't risk making it worse by driving it too much in this condition. Thanks again for all the help, it's so much better going into the shop knowing what to expect rather than being completely in the dark about it. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience with this!
