BMW X2 Stalling & Fuel Odor: Vent System Problem?

Check engine light on

|

Stalling while idling

Hi everyone! I've got an issue with my 2023 BMW X2. The check engine light is on, and the engine keeps stalling when idle. Also noticing what seems to be a fuel smell inside. I suspect it might be related to the fuel tank ventilation system, but I'd like to hear from anyone who's dealt with similar symptoms. Did you get it fixed? What did the workshop find? Any insights would be really helpful.

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2021 BMW X1 last summer. The symptoms were exactly what you're describing, check engine light, stalling at idle, and that nasty fuel smell in the cabin. Took it to my workshop and turns out it was a defective activated charcoal filter. The repair set me back about 275 Euro, but it fixed all the issues completely. The fuel vapors weren't being properly filtered, which caused the stalling and the smell. Before you head to a workshop though, could you share: Any diagnostic codes you've pulled? Does the smell get worse after refueling? How long has this been happening? The X1 and X2 share quite a few components, so I might be able to give you more specific advice based on my experience. Let me know!

Thanks for sharing your experience! Mine's pretty recent with just 30489 KM and had its latest service about a month ago. Haven't pulled any diagnostic codes yet, but yeah, the smell definitely gets stronger right after filling up. It started about a week ago, and I'm getting more concerned since it seems to be getting worse. Based on what you're saying about the charcoal filter, that could definitely be it. The symptoms match up perfectly. Might have to bite the bullet and get it checked out at the workshop. Really appreciate the detailed response!

Hey again! Hearing about your mileage and the timing of when it started, I'm even more convinced it's the charcoal filter, especially since you mentioned the smell gets worse after refueling. That's exactly what happened with my X1. Just wanted to add that after I got mine fixed, I learned these filters can fail prematurely if you frequently "top off" the tank after the pump clicks off. I used to do this all the time, thinking I was maximizing my range, but apparently it's not great for the system. Since your car is still pretty new, you might want to check if it's covered under warranty. I had to pay out of pocket for mine since it was just out of warranty, but you might be luckier! Don't wait too long though, driving with this issue isn't great for the engine, and that fuel smell can't be healthy either. Quick tip from my experience: If you're planning to take it to the workshop, try to book an appointment right after you notice the smell is strongest (usually after refueling). Makes it easier for them to diagnose. Let us know how it goes!

Thanks so much for the additional info! I actually had no idea about the "topping off" issue, guilty as charged on that one. I've been doing exactly that, trying to squeeze in those extra drops of fuel. Definitely going to stop that habit now! I just called my dealer and you'll be happy to know it IS still under warranty! They can get me in tomorrow morning, and I made sure to mention all the symptoms plus what you shared about the charcoal filter. Really hope it's just that and nothing more serious. I'll take your advice and fill up the tank this evening before taking it in tomorrow, should make it easier for them to diagnose, like you said. Really grateful for your help with this! You've saved me a lot of worry and guesswork. I'll update the thread once I get it sorted out.
