BMW X2 Rough Running + Stalling, Fuel System Crisis?

Loss of engine power

|

Poor fuel economy

|

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

|

Stalling while idling

Hey all! My 2019 BMW X2 (gas engine, 137,681 km) has been giving me grief lately. The engine keeps jerking during drives, burning through fuel like crazy, and losing power. It also stalls when idling and blows smoke under acceleration. My previous mechanic experience wasn't great, so I'm hesitant to go back. I suspect it might be the injection system, but wanted to hear from others who've dealt with similar symptoms in their X2. Any recommendations on what to check or trusted mechanics who really know BMWs? Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I faced very similar issues with my 2016 BMW X1 last year. The symptoms you're describing definitely point towards a fuel injection problem, I dealt with the exact same jerking, high consumption, and power loss. After a thorough inspection, it turned out the fuel injector wiring harness had deteriorated, causing poor connections. Some connectors were corroded and one plug was barely making contact. This was causing erratic fuel delivery and all those symptoms you mentioned. The repair involved replacing the wiring harness and checking all injector connections. While it wasn't a cheap fix, it wasn't as serious as I initially feared, no internal engine damage. The symptoms completely disappeared after the repair. Based on my experience, I'd strongly suggest getting those injectors and their connections checked first. The smoking under acceleration really hints at fuel delivery issues. Don't wait too long though, running like this could cause bigger problems down the line. Hope this helps!

Thanks for sharing your experience! I had almost forgotten about this issue until I saw your post. Glad you were able to get it sorted out with the wiring harness. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much the repair ended up costing you? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other quirks pop up? My BMW's been in the shop a few times lately, so I'm trying to get a sense of what I might be looking at cost-wise if it turns out to be the same problem.

Hey again! Yes, absolutely, happy to give you an update! I actually just got this fixed last week and it cost me 95 € to repair the faulty cable connection. Honestly, I was relieved it wasn't more expensive, as BMW repairs can really hit the wallet hard sometimes. Since getting it sorted, my X1's been running like a dream, no more jerking, stalling, or any of those annoying symptoms I mentioned before. The fuel consumption is back to normal too, which is saving me quite a bit at the pump. The mechanic confirmed it was definitely the injection system causing all the trouble, just as I suspected. I know what you mean about multiple shop visits, it can be really frustrating. But in this case, once they fixed that cable connection issue, everything else fell into place. No other quirks have shown up since then (fingers crossed it stays that way!). If your symptoms are similar to what I experienced, you might be looking at a similar repair cost. It's definitely worth getting it checked out, much better than letting it develop into something more serious! Let me know how it goes if you get it looked at!

Thanks for the detailed response! Just wanted to give you an update since you were so helpful. I bit the bullet and took it to a new mechanic yesterday. Turns out you were spot on about the injection system! The mechanic found similar wiring issues with corroded connectors. The repair was actually less expensive than I expected, came in at around 120 for parts and labor. They had it fixed in about two hours, and what a difference! No more jerking or stalling, and the smoke's completely gone. The engine's running super smooth now, even better than before these issues started. Really glad I didn't put this off any longer. The mechanic mentioned I caught it just in time before it could cause any serious damage to the engine. Also happy I decided to try this new place, they were straightforward about the problem and didn't try to upsell me on unnecessary repairs. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it really helped me make the decision to get it checked out!
