BMW X2 Rough Idle & Stalling: Camshaft Sensor Issue?

Stalling while idling

Check engine light on

Engine hard to start

Hey everyone! My 2018 BMW X2 (gas) with 103K km is giving me headaches. The engine's running rough, stalling at idle, and struggling to start. When I hit the gas, it jerks and feels unresponsive. Check engine light is on too. I suspect it might be the camshaft sensor based on what I've read, but after a bad experience with my previous mechanic, I'm looking for some advice. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? If so, was it the camshaft sensor, and what was your repair experience like? Thanks in advance for any insights!

Hey! I had nearly identical issues with my 2015 BMW X1 last spring. Same symptoms, rough idle, stalling, jerky acceleration, and that dreaded check engine light. Turned out to be a faulty camshaft position sensor encoder wheel. Got it checked at the shop, and the diagnostic confirmed my suspicions. The encoder wheel on the exhaust camshaft was worn out, causing incorrect timing signals. The repair involved replacing both the encoder wheel and sensor since they work as a pair. It was definitely a serious issue that needed immediate attention, these symptoms can lead to further engine damage if left unchecked. The repair took about 4-5 hours, mainly because they had to remove quite a few components to access the camshaft area. After the fix, the car ran like new again. No more rough idling or hesitation when accelerating. Based on your symptoms, I'd say get it checked soon, it sounds very similar to what I experienced.

Thanks for sharing your experience, That encoder wheel issue sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. Just wanted to follow up, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other related issues pop up? Cheers!

Hey! Glad to help update you on this! After dealing with that encoder wheel problem on my X1, I got it fixed at the shop and paid 695 € for the complete repair. That covered both parts and labor, they had to replace the encoder wheel on the camshafts that was acting up. The good news is that since getting it fixed, my car's been running perfectly smooth. No more of those annoying stalling issues or rough idling problems we talked about. It's been about 8 months now, and honestly, it feels like driving a different car, in a good way! The acceleration is crisp again, and that frustrating jerking sensation is completely gone. Trust me, once you get this sorted, you'll notice the difference right away. The camshaft sensor repair was definitely worth every penny. Just make sure you get it done soon to avoid any potential engine damage. Let me know if you need any other info!

Just got back from the mechanic and wanted to update you. You were spot on! Took my X2 to a certified BMW shop, and they confirmed it was indeed the camshaft sensor encoder wheel. The repair cost was pretty close to what you mentioned, ended up paying around 720 €. The whole process took about 5 hours, but wow, what a difference! The car runs amazingly smooth now. No more stalling, no jerking, and that annoying check engine light is finally off. The mechanic was great too, really explained everything they were doing and even showed me the worn-out parts. Really appreciate your help with this. Saved me from stressing too much about what could've been wrong. Feels good to have a properly running car again! Thanks again
