Thanks so much for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know about the electrical connection being the culprit. Such a relief it wasn't something more serious. Do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also, has everything been working smoothly since they fixed it? I've got a BMW X2 and want to make sure I'm prepared for what might come up.
Hey again! Great to hear back from you. I'm happy to tell you that after getting my X1 fixed, everything's been working like a charm. The power steering is now super smooth, no more of that annoying shaking or sponginess I mentioned before. The repair was actually pretty straightforward and cost me 95 € to fix. It was just a cable connection problem, which the mechanic sorted out pretty quickly. Much cheaper than I was initially worried it might be! They found a faulty plug connection that was causing all the trouble. Since the fix, my steering has been absolutely perfect, nice and responsive, just like when the car was new. No more wrestling with the wheel in parking lots! Trust me, it's worth getting it sorted sooner rather than later. You don't want to risk any steering issues getting worse. If you're still looking for a mechanic, definitely make sure they know their way around BMW's electronic power steering systems. They're quite different from the old-school hydraulic ones, as I mentioned before.
Thanks for all the detailed info! Just wanted to update you on what happened with my X2. Finally got it checked out yesterday, and you were spot on about getting it fixed quickly. Turned out my issue was pretty similar to yours, a loose connection in the steering system. The mechanic I found was actually great. I was nervous at first, but they really knew their stuff about BMWs. The whole thing took about two hours, and the bill came to less than I expected. The shaking is completely gone now, and the steering feels amazing again, so smooth and responsive. Had to share a funny moment though, while I was waiting, another guy came in with the exact same problem! The mechanic joked about having a "power steering party." Who knew these issues were so common? Really glad I asked for advice here. The car's running perfectly now, and I've finally found a mechanic I can trust. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!
Hey there! I can relate to your power steering troubles. Had a similar issue with my 2019 BMW X1 last month. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I experienced, that spongy feel and lack of power assist are telltale signs. In my case, it turned out to be a faulty electrical connection in the power steering control module. The connector had some corrosion and wasn't making proper contact. My mechanic cleaned the connections and replaced a damaged wiring harness. It wasn't a major repair, but definitely not something you'd want to ignore since it affects your steering control. I'd suggest getting it checked soon, power steering issues can get worse if left unattended. Since your X2 is newer, it might even be covered under warranty, so you might want to consider taking it to a BMW dealer first. Based on my experience, make sure whoever works on it has experience with BMW's electric power steering systems. They're quite different from older hydraulic setups.
