BMW X2 Power Seat Failure, Memory and Manual Not Working

Electric seats malfunction

|

Fault stored

Hey everyone! My 2018 BMW X2 is having issues with the power seats. Both manual adjustment and memory settings aren't working at all. The car shows an error code related to this problem. I suspect it might be due to restricted electric seat movement, but I'm not completely sure. Has anyone dealt with something similar? Would really appreciate hearing about your repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. What did your mechanic find and fix? Thanks in advance!

Hi there! I have some experience working on cars, and I actually faced a similar issue with my 2016 BMW X1 last year. The symptoms were identical, complete failure of power seat functions and error codes popping up. After taking it to my regular workshop, they found it was just a loose connection in the wiring harness under the seat. The cable had worked itself loose over time. Total repair cost was 95 Euro for diagnostic and fixing the connection. Before you head to a mechanic though, could you share: Does this affect both driver and passenger seats? Did it stop working suddenly or gradually? Are you hearing any unusual noises when trying to adjust the seats? I know BMW X-series pretty well (also owned an X3), so I might be able to offer more specific advice once I have these details.

Thanks for your detailed response! I'm having the same exact problem with both front seats in my X2 (187350 KM on the clock). To answer your questions, yes, it's affecting both seats, and it happened pretty much overnight. No strange noises at all, they're just completely unresponsive. It's pretty frustrating since I had my last service just two months ago and everything was working fine then. The loose connection definitely sounds like it could be the culprit, especially since both seats are affected. That would be a much better scenario than having to replace the entire seat control module! I'll definitely get that checked out first. Really appreciate you sharing your repair cost too, helps me know what to expect.

Hey, great to hear back from you! Yeah, having both seats fail suddenly really does sound similar to what I experienced with my X1. Since you mentioned the timing, right after a service, I'm wondering if maybe someone accidentally disturbed the wiring during the maintenance work. That's actually how I figured out my issue started, it was right after they did some work under the seats. In my case, I first freaked out thinking it was going to be super expensive, but it turned out to be such a simple fix. The mechanic showed me where the harness had come loose, it's this really accessible spot under the seat. Since both your seats are affected, it might be worth checking the main harness connection point where it branches off to both seats. One thing I learned from my experience, don't let them try to sell you a new seat control module right away. Make sure they thoroughly check all the connections first. Pretty much every BMW mechanic I've talked to says these loose connections are way more common than actual module failures. Quick tip, while you're waiting to get it fixed, try not to mess with the seat controls too much. I made that mistake and ended up with a completely misaligned seat that was super uncomfortable until I got it fixed! Let me know what you find out, really curious if it turns out to be the same issue as mine.

Thanks so much for all this helpful information! You've definitely put my mind at ease about the potential repair costs. I think you might be onto something about the timing with my recent service, it makes total sense that the wiring could have been disturbed during maintenance. I just called my mechanic and managed to get an appointment for tomorrow. I specifically mentioned checking the wiring harness connections first, just like you suggested. They seemed to think that was a logical place to start, especially given how both seats stopped working at the same time. I really appreciate the tip about not messing with the controls too much, luckily I haven't been fiddling with them since they stopped working. I'll definitely update you once I find out what the actual problem is. Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience, it's been super helpful in knowing what to expect and what to ask the mechanic to check!
