BMW X2 Multi-System Failure: Warning Lights & Controls Dead

Fault stored

|

Cruise control without function

Hi all, my 2023 BMW X2 is acting up with multiple system failures. The dashboard looks like a Christmas tree with ESP, ABS, steering, and brake warning lights all illuminated at once. None of the steering wheel buttons work, including cruise control. Has anyone experienced similar issues, particularly with cruise control failure? Would love to hear about your repair experiences and what the workshop found. What was the fix in your case? Thanks in advance.

Hey there! I've got some experience working on cars and had a similar issue with my 2021 BMW X1. Those warning lights can be pretty scary when they all light up together! Had the exact same symptoms, dashboard lit up like crazy and steering wheel controls completely dead. Took it to my trusted workshop and turns out it was just a faulty connection in the steering wheel wiring harness. The cables weren't properly connected to the control module. The fix was pretty straightforward, they had to replace some connectors and reseat the cables. Cost me 95 Euro and haven't had any issues since. These electrical gremlins can be tricky! Could you tell me if you've noticed any patterns when these warnings appear? Like does it happen after driving for a while or right at startup? Also, what's your mileage? This info would help figure out if we're dealing with the same problem.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Mine's at 81850 KM and just had its service last month. Actually, I've noticed these warnings tend to pop up about 15-20 minutes into driving, especially when I'm using the highway. It's definitely concerning since it's a relatively new car. Good to hear your fix was straightforward, gives me hope it might not be anything too serious. Did your mechanic mention if this is a common issue with newer BMWs? I might take it to the workshop this week just to be safe.

Hey again! Good to hear back from you about those warning lights. Yeah, my BMW had similar behavior, warnings popping up during highway drives. What's interesting is that my mechanic actually did mention it's becoming a more common issue in newer BMWs, especially the X series. Just to add to my previous experience, after they fixed the wiring harness issue, they also found that heat from the engine bay was causing some of the connector materials to expand slightly, which explained why it mostly happened after driving for a while. That's probably why you're seeing it 15-20 minutes into your drives too. Since your mileage is pretty similar to what mine was when I had the issue (I was around 78000 KM), I'd definitely get it checked out. What's really strange is that yours is doing this right after a service, might be worth mentioning that to the workshop. They might have disturbed something while doing other work. Keep me posted on what they find! Really curious if it turns out to be the same wiring harness problem. These modern cars with all their electronics can be a bit finicky sometimes.

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! That's really interesting about the heat from the engine bay affecting the connectors, makes total sense why it happens after driving for a while. You're right, it is weird that this started happening right after the service. I've just booked it in for next Tuesday and specifically mentioned the wiring harness issue to them. I'll make sure to tell them about the timing of the warnings too. Super helpful to know about your repair costs too, at least I know I'm not looking at anything astronomical if it's the same problem. It's actually a relief to hear this is somewhat common in newer BMWs and not just my car acting up. I'll definitely update you once I get it back from the workshop. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it's made me feel a lot better about the whole situation!
