Thanks so much for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know about the wiring harness, I wouldn't have thought to check that. How much did you end up paying for the whole repair job? Also curious if you've had any other issues pop up since getting it fixed last month? I'm trying to get a sense of whether I should prepare for any related problems down the line with my X2.
Hey there! Just wanted to follow up on your questions. Actually, my situation turned out differently than what I initially suspected. Took it to a mechanic and they found it was indeed the faulty engine oil temperature sensor, exactly what you thought it might be with your X2! The fix was pretty straightforward, they found a bad cable connection to the sensor that needed sorting out. Total bill came to 95 € which honestly wasn't as painful as I was expecting. Since getting it fixed last month, the car's been running like a dream, no limp mode, no check engine light, nothing. Looking back, I was probably overthinking it when I first posted about the wiring harness. These BMW sensors can be tricky little things, but sometimes it's just a simple fix. Haven't had any other issues pop up since then, so I wouldn't worry too much about related problems down the line. Just keep an eye on your regular maintenance schedule and you should be good to go. Sorry if I sent you down the wrong path initially with the wiring harness theory! Sometimes these things turn out simpler than we expect.
Thank you so much for the update! I actually just got back from the mechanic today, and you'll never believe it, it was indeed the oil temp sensor, just like we both suspected! The mechanic showed me the faulty part and explained how these sensors tend to fail over time. Total repair came to 120 € including labor, which wasn't too bad considering how worried I was initially. They also did a full diagnostic scan just to be safe, but everything else checked out fine. Car's running perfectly now, no more limp mode or warning lights. Funny how we sometimes expect the worst, right? I was imagining having to replace major components, but it turned out to be a relatively simple fix. Really glad I asked here first, helped calm my nerves knowing someone else dealt with similar issues. Thanks again for sharing your experience and following up. Time to enjoy my X2 without worrying about every little noise or light!
I had a similar issue with my 2017 BMW X1 last month. The symptoms were exactly the same, limp mode, check engine light, and error codes. Initially thought it was the oil temp sensor too, but turned out to be a faulty wiring harness connecting to the transmission control module. The connector pins were corroded and some wires had worn insulation. The mechanic showed me how the connection was loose, which was causing intermittent communication issues. They had to replace the entire wiring harness and clean the connector pins. Not a super serious issue, but definitely something that needed immediate attention to prevent transmission damage. Best advice: make sure to have a proper diagnostic scan done first. These symptoms can be misleading and you'll want to confirm the exact issue before any parts are replaced. The repair took about 4-5 hours in total. For reference, my X1 had around 98K km when this happened. These electrical gremlins can show up in BMWs, but they're usually fixable once properly diagnosed.
