Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! That's exactly what I've been dealing with, good to know I'm not alone with these lighting gremlins. I'm going to take your advice and get it looked at asap. Would you mind telling me roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole fix? Also curious if you've had any other electrical quirks pop up since they sorted it out?
Hey again! Just wanted to update you, got my issue totally sorted out and thought you'd like to know since you're dealing with the same headache. The mechanic found it was indeed a faulty light switch, just like mine was. They fixed the cable connection that was acting up, and it cost me 95 € in total. I'm actually really relieved because it was a pretty straightforward fix in the end. Haven't had a single problem with the lights since then, everything's working exactly as it should. The automatic lighting system is back to normal, no more warning messages, and I can finally control my lights properly again. And to answer your question about other electrical issues, nope, haven't seen any other problems pop up since the repair. It's been smooth sailing! Honestly, it was worth every penny to get it fixed properly. If you're still shopping around for a repair, just make sure they check those connection points like we discussed. These BMWs can be a bit finicky with their electronics, but once you sort them out, they're solid.
Thanks for that detailed update! Finally got mine checked out today and wow, what an experience. The mechanic I found was actually fantastic, really knew his stuff with BMWs. Like yours, it was also a wiring problem, but mine had a slightly different twist. A tiny rodent had actually chewed through some of the wiring! Can you believe it? The repair took about three hours, cost me a bit more than yours at around 150 bucks, but totally worth it. They not only fixed the wiring but also installed some protective covering to prevent future damage. The relief of having working lights again is amazing, no more driving around with those permanently stuck beams. I appreciate everyone's help here. It's really put my mind at ease knowing this was a common issue with a proper fix. Definitely keeping this mechanic's number for any future problems!
Had the same problem with my 2018 BMW X4 last winter. The automatic light system went crazy, stuck beams and warning messages popping up on the dash. Turned out the connection between the light switch module and the main control unit was corroded. My mechanic found some water damage that messed up the wiring harness near the switch. It's not super serious, but definitely needs proper diagnosis and repair. The fix involved replacing the light switch module and cleaning up the connection points. Also had to get the system recoded to sync with the car's computer. Took about half a day at the shop. I'd suggest getting it checked soon though, driving with permanent low beams isn't safe and could lead to other electrical issues. The symptoms you're describing are pretty much identical to what I experienced.
