BMW X2 Key Fob Dead: Door Electronics Going Haywire

Key fob issues

Hi everyone! Having trouble with my 2021 BMW X2 (69k km, gas engine) and hoping someone can share their experience. My key fob suddenly stopped working and the car's throwing errors about open circuits and battery issues. Pretty sure it's the door handle electronics acting up. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear about reliable mechanics who've successfully fixed this kind of problem. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a really similar issue with my 2018 BMW X1 last month. The symptoms you're describing match what I experienced, key fob problems and those same error messages. Turned out it was a faulty wiring connection in the door handle sensor module. The copper contacts had corroded, causing intermittent signal issues. The mechanic showed me that the cable harness near the door hinge had some wear too, which made things worse. It was a straightforward fix once diagnosed correctly, they replaced the sensor module and rewired the connection. Not a super serious issue, but definitely something that needs proper attention. The whole job took about 3 hours. Hope this helps point you in the right direction. Just make sure whoever works on it has experience with BMW electrical systems.

Thanks so much for sharing this! Really helps to hear someone else went through the same thing. My situation sounds exactly like what you had, glad to know it wasn't something more serious. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also, has everything been working smoothly since they fixed it? My X2 is my daily driver so I want to make sure I get it sorted properly the first time around.

Hey again! Great to hear back from you. Yes, absolutely, everything has been working perfectly since I got it fixed last week. Such a relief! The whole door handle system and key fob are working like a charm now. The total bill came to 95 € for fixing the cable and plug connection that was causing all the trouble. Pretty reasonable considering I was worried it might be something way more expensive. The mechanic showed me how the old connection had gotten corroded, it was actually interesting to see what caused all that hassle. My X1 is also my daily ride, so I totally get wanting to make sure it's properly sorted. I can honestly say it feels as good as new now, no more error messages, no more key fob issues, just smooth sailing. Trust me, once you get it fixed, you'll be wondering why you didn't do it sooner! Let me know how it goes when you get yours sorted. Always good to share experiences about these things!

Thank you so much for all the details! I actually just got back from the mechanic today and wanted to update you. You were spot on, it was exactly what you described. The mechanic found corroded wiring in the door handle, plus some wear and tear around the hinge area. The whole repair took about 4 hours, and they charged me 120 € total. A bit more than what you paid, but they also replaced some protective covering around the wires to prevent future issues. Had to wait around at their shop, but it was worth it seeing them actually show me what was wrong. Car's running perfectly now, no more error messages, and the key fob works like it did when the car was new. Such a relief! Really appreciate you sharing your experience, helped me feel much more confident about getting it fixed. Best decision I've made in a while! Thanks again for all your help!
