BMW X2 Engine Jerking & Power Loss, Warning Light Issue

Loss of engine power

|

Fault stored

Hi there! Anyone experienced similar issues with their 2018 BMW X2? My engine started acting up recently, it's jerking and feels underpowered. The check engine light came on, and when scanned, it shows there's a fault code stored. The car has about 92K kilometers on it. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm hesitant to go back. Looking for recommendations on what this could be and if anyone has dealt with similar symptoms on their X2. Thanks for any insight!

I had a similar issue with my 2015 BMW X4 last year after getting it chip-tuned at a third-party shop. The symptoms were exactly what you're describing, jerking, power loss, and that dreaded check engine light. Took it to a certified BMW workshop, turns out the aftermarket tuning had messed up the engine control unit (ECU) mapping. The boost pressure was way off, causing irregular fuel injection timing. They had to reset the ECU to factory settings and reflash the original software. It was pretty serious since continued driving could've damaged the engine components. The repair took two days, but it's been running perfectly since then. If you've had any tuning work done, that might be your culprit. Even if not, these symptoms typically point to electronic/ECU issues rather than mechanical ones. Would definitely recommend getting it checked at an authorized dealer. These modern engines are too complex for trial and error fixes.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful since I'm experiencing something quite similar. The ECU/mapping issue sounds like it could be what's happening with mine too. Do you remember roughly how much the repair set you back? And has everything been smooth sailing since the fix, or have you noticed any other quirks?

Hey again! Happy to give you an update on my X4 situation. After getting it fixed at the dealer, it's been running like a charm, absolutely no issues whatsoever. The repair bill came to 180 € to reset and reflash the ECU back to factory settings. Worth every penny if you ask me! The fault code that was showing up completely disappeared after they fixed the botched chip tuning job from that third-party shop. Learned my lesson about trying to save money on aftermarket tuning, sometimes cheaper isn't better! The car feels so much smoother now, back to its original performance specs. Just keep in mind that the cost might vary a bit depending on what exactly needs to be done, but in my case, getting rid of that jerking and power loss issue was pretty straightforward once they identified the problem. Best decision I made was getting it sorted at the dealer rather than letting it potentially cause more damage. Hope this helps with your decision! Let me know how it goes if you get it checked out.

Thanks for all the details! I actually took your advice and got my X2 checked at a certified shop today. Funny enough, it wasn't the ECU, turned out to be a faulty ignition coil and spark plugs. The mechanic was really thorough and explained everything clearly. The repair cost was reasonable, around 250 € for parts and labor. The best part? No more jerking or power issues! The car's running smooth as butter now. I'm so relieved it wasn't anything more serious. Really glad I didn't put off getting it checked, you were right about not risking further damage. The mechanic also did a quick inspection of other components while they were at it, and everything else looked good. Thanks again for pushing me to get it properly checked. Sometimes you just need that extra nudge to make the right call. Think I've found my new go-to mechanic too, much better than my last experience!
