BMW X2 Electric Steering Column Frozen, Help Needed

Electric steering column adjustment without function

|

Fault stored

Need advice, X2's electric steering column completely stuck! Hey all! My 2019 BMW X2 (gas engine, 196K km) is giving me headaches. The electric steering column adjustment stopped working completely and there's an error code stored. After a bad experience with my previous mechanic, I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with a similar steering column issue? What was the repair cost and would you recommend your mechanic? Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance

Had the same issue with my 2016 BMW X1 last month. The steering column was completely frozen and wouldn't adjust at all. Turned out to be a faulty wiring connection near the steering column motor. The connector had corroded and wasn't making proper contact. The fix wasn't too complicated, just needed the connector replaced and some rewiring. It took the technician about 2 hours to complete. Not a serious mechanical issue, more of an electrical nuisance really. The part itself was pretty basic. I'd suggest having a certified BMW technician look at it since they'll have the right diagnostic tools to pinpoint the exact problem. Mine showed the same error code and symptoms you're describing. These electrical gremlins can be tricky to diagnose without proper equipment. Best of luck with the repair. Let us know how it turns out.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Really helpful to know it was just a wiring issue in your case. I'm currently looking at repair shops and this gives me a better idea of what to expect. Would you mind sharing roughly how much you ended up paying for the fix? Also, has everything been working smoothly since the repair?

Hey there! Happy to give you an update. Since I had the steering column fixed, it's been working perfectly, no more issues at all. The total repair cost was 95 € to fix the faulty cable connection, which wasn't too bad considering I was worried it might be something more serious! The technician did a great job and it was definitely worth getting it sorted properly. They knew exactly what they were looking for once I described the symptoms. The whole thing took just a couple hours like I mentioned before. Honestly, having a properly working electric steering column again is such a relief, you don't realize how much you use it until it stops working! Feel free to ask if you need any other details about the repair. These electrical niggles can be annoying but they're usually pretty straightforward to fix once you get them to the right mechanic.

Just wanted to update everyone, got my X2's steering column fixed today! Turned out you were spot on about it being an electrical issue. The mechanic found a damaged wire harness that was causing the problem. The repair took about 3 hours and cost me 120 €, a bit more than yours but still way better than what I was fearing. The mechanic was really professional and explained everything clearly. Even showed me the old damaged parts. Really glad I didn't put this off any longer. The steering column's working perfectly now, smooth adjustments in all directions. Such a relief to have this sorted! Thanks again for sharing your experience, it really helped me know what to expect and not panic about potentially huge repair bills. And yeah, you're absolutely right about not realizing how much you use these features until they stop working! Anyway, just wanted to close the loop on this. Really appreciate everyone's help!

Let our mechanics help you!
