Thanks for your detailed response! I just hit 146174 KM and had my last service about two months ago. Actually, my steering wheel controls are completely dead too, which makes me think it might be more serious than just the head unit. No warning messages show up on the instrument cluster, it's like the whole system's just given up. Did replacing your head unit fix all the issues completely? Really hoping I don't have to deal with expensive CAN-BUS repairs like you did initially.
Hey again! Thanks for the additional info about your X2. You know, hearing about your steering wheel controls being dead too actually makes me think your situation might be different from what I experienced. When I had my issue, my steering wheel controls were still working fine, that was actually one of the ways I could tell it was just the head unit. With my X1, after they replaced the head unit (cost me around 1200 Euro, ouch!), everything went back to normal immediately. But your case sounds more complex, especially with the steering controls being dead and hitting that 146K mark. Looking back at my experience and what you're describing, I'm starting to think it could be the central gateway module. That would explain why multiple systems are affected at once. When they initially diagnosed my car as having CAN-BUS issues, they mentioned that the gateway module is often the culprit when multiple systems fail simultaneously. Have you noticed any other electrical quirks lately? Like, any issues with the power windows or central locking? Those symptoms would help confirm if it's the gateway module. If it is, it's definitely something you'll want a proper BMW workshop to handle, I learned my lesson trying to save money at an independent shop first!
Thanks for the follow-up, you've got me worried now about the gateway module! Come to think of it, I have noticed my central locking acting up occasionally over the past few weeks, but I didn't connect the dots until you mentioned it. The power windows are working fine though. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and take it to the BMW workshop. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it's super helpful knowing what to expect and what questions to ask. At least now I won't be completely in the dark when they start talking about CAN-BUS systems and gateway modules. I'll definitely update once I get it diagnosed properly. Thanks again for taking the time to help me figure this out!
Hey there! I've got some experience working on cars, though I wouldn't call myself an expert. I had a similar issue with my 2019 BMW X1 last year. The infotainment system would completely die, black screen and all. Initially, my workshop suggested it was a CAN-BUS problem and charged me 235 Euro for diagnostics and what they claimed was a "bus repair," but that didn't fix it at all. Turned out it was actually just a faulty head unit that needed replacement. The real fix was much simpler than expected. Since you've got a 2021 X2, could you tell me if you notice any other electrical issues? Like, does your steering wheel control still work? And do you get any warning messages on your instrument cluster? This info would help narrow down if you're dealing with the same problem I had. Also, BMWs of that generation (both X1 and X2) can sometimes have similar quirks, so knowing these details would really help figure out if we're looking at the same issue.
