BMW X2 Climate Control Dead, Temperature Sensor Issue?

A/C System Not Engaging

Error message in the speedometer

Hi everyone! My 2022 BMW X2 is acting up. Getting error messages in the dash, and the entire AC system has stopped working. The automatic climate control isn't responding, and the AC won't turn on at all. My mechanic thinks it might be a faulty temperature sensor in the heat exchanger. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear about your repair experiences and what the actual fix turned out to be. Thanks in advance!

Hi! I've got some experience with car repairs, though I wouldn't call myself an expert. I had a very similar issue with my 2020 BMW X1 last summer. Started with weird error messages, then the whole AC system went dead. Initially thought it might be just a sensor too, but turned out the AC control unit itself was fried. Had to take it to my regular workshop, and they diagnosed a completely defective control module. The repair, including parts and labor, set me back about 980 Euro. Since then, everything's working perfectly. Based on your description, it sounds really similar to what I experienced. What error messages are you seeing exactly? Also, before the complete failure, did you notice any intermittent issues with the AC or temperature controls? I know the X2 and X1 share quite a few components, so this might help point you in the right direction. Also, make sure to check if your car is still under warranty, could save you a decent amount of money.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! Really helpful info. Mine's at 125783 KM, and I just started noticing these issues about a week after my latest service. The error message I'm getting is "Climate Control System Malfunction" with a yellow warning light. Before it completely died, the AC was actually blowing warm air intermittently for about 2-3 days. You mentioned your control module, that's making me think this might be more than just a sensor issue. Did your AC also blow warm air before it completely stopped? I'm hoping I can get this sorted without a complete module replacement, but your experience sounds pretty spot-on with what I'm dealing with. Think I'll get a second opinion before moving forward with any repairs. Really appreciate your detailed response!

Hey again! Yeah, that error message and the warm air issue sounds exactly like what I went through with my X1. My AC was definitely blowing warm air for a few days before giving up completely, it was super frustrating, especially since it happened during a really warm week. I actually tried changing the temperature sensor first because my mechanic thought that might be the cheaper fix, but it didn't solve the problem. Wasted about 200 Euro on that attempt. In retrospect, the intermittent warm air was the big clue that pointed to the control module rather than just a sensor issue. Since you mentioned yours started acting up right after a service, might be worth checking if anything got disconnected or damaged during the maintenance work. But honestly, given how similar your symptoms are to what I experienced (especially that warm air before total failure), I'd bet money it's the control module. Quick tip from my experience, if you do end up needing a new control module, make sure they properly calibrate it after installation. My first repair attempt had some issues because they didn't do the calibration correctly, and I had to bring it back. Super annoying! Keep us posted on what you find out! Always interesting to hear how these things turn out.

Wow, thanks for all that additional detail! You've really helped me understand what I might be dealing with. The fact that you tried the sensor replacement first and it didn't work definitely saves me from potentially wasting money on the same dead end. I just called the service center where I had my maintenance done, and they're willing to take a look to check if anything was disturbed during the service. But based on your experience, I'm mentally preparing myself for the control module replacement. I'll make sure to specifically ask about the calibration process too, thanks for that tip! Really don't want to deal with multiple repair attempts. I've scheduled an appointment for tomorrow morning, and I've got a much better idea of what questions to ask now. I'll definitely update here once I know what the actual issue is. Really appreciate all your help and for sharing your experience so thoroughly. It's made this whole situation feel a lot less overwhelming!
