BMW X2 Check Engine Light: O2 Sensor Problems?

Check engine light on

Poor fuel economy

Hey everyone! My 2020 BMW X2 has been acting up lately. The check engine light is on, fuel economy has gotten worse, and there's an error code stored. I suspect the O2 sensor might be failing. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Really interested to hear what repairs were done and how your workshop fixed it. Looking for some real experiences before taking it to the shop. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I can relate as I had a similar issue with my 2018 BMW X1. I have some experience working on cars, mostly basic maintenance and troubleshooting. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I faced. I initially thought it was the O2 sensor too, but when I took it to my workshop, they found it was actually a loose connection in the wiring harness near the sensor. Total repair cost was 95 Euro, they fixed the cable connection and cleared the error codes. The fuel economy went back to normal right away. Before we dig deeper, could you share: What error code you're getting? Did you notice any other symptoms? Has there been any recent work done on the car? This might help identify if you're dealing with the same issue I had with my X1.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My X2 is fairly well maintained with the latest service done at 57409 KM. In my case, the error code is P0171 (System Too Lean). Haven't had any recent work done on it, and the problem just started showing up last week. I'm also noticing a slight hesitation during acceleration, especially when the engine is cold. The fuel economy has dropped from the usual 8.5L/100km to about 10L/100km. Since you mentioned the wiring harness, I'll definitely have them check that when I take it in. Hoping it's something similarly simple and not a complete sensor replacement!

Hey again! Thanks for those details about your X2. You know what's interesting, my X1 actually had that exact same error code (P0171) at first, but my situation turned out a bit different from what I initially thought with the wiring. After they fixed that loose connection I mentioned, the problem came back about a week later. Turned out I was only half right in my first response. They did a more thorough check and found that the O2 sensor was actually failing too, it wasn't just the wiring. That hesitation during cold acceleration you're describing? That's exactly what mine did too. Had to get the sensor replaced after all, cost me about 300 for parts and labor, but it fixed everything, fuel economy went back to normal, no more hesitation, and the engine light stayed off. Looking back, I probably should have mentioned this possibility in my first reply, but I was really hoping the wiring fix would be enough like it was initially. Since your symptoms are matching mine so closely, especially that cold start hesitation, I'd say get both checked, the wiring AND the sensor. Better to catch it all at once than make multiple trips to the shop like I did!

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! Really appreciate you sharing the full story about your experience. That's super helpful to know about the sensor ultimately being the culprit, even after the wiring fix. I was actually hoping it would just be a simple wiring issue, but hearing about your similar symptoms, especially that cold start hesitation, makes me think I might be looking at a sensor replacement too. I'll definitely get them to check both when I take it in tomorrow. You've probably saved me from making two trips to the shop! At least now I can go in expecting around 300 for the full fix if it turns out to be the same issue. The fuel economy hit is getting expensive anyway, so it'll be worth sorting it out properly the first time. Really grateful for your help and for being honest about how your repair journey actually went. I'll update the thread once I get it fixed in case anyone else runs into the same problem with their X2!

Check if the timing chain is properly aligned and tensioned, as misalignment can cause this error. If the chain is loose or worn, it may need replacement. It's crucial to address this promptly, as timing issues can lead to severe engine damage. Let me know how it goes or if you have further questions!
