BMW X2 Brake Warning Lights, Switch Problem?

Brake light not working

|

Fault stored

Hey everyone! Having trouble with my 2020 BMW X2 (gas engine). Getting multiple warnings, brake light error message on the dash, plus some error codes stored in the system. I suspect it might be the brake light switch acting up, but not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Wondering what your mechanics found and how they fixed it. Would really appreciate hearing about your experiences and repair solutions. Thanks!

Hey there! I've got some experience working on cars. I actually had a similar issue with my 2018 BMW X1 last year. Those brake warning messages can be scary! In my case, it turned out I hadn't fully engaged the brake pedal when starting the car, totally my fault. The car's safety system is pretty sensitive and throws these warnings to be on the safe side. The fix was super simple, I just had to properly press down the brake pedal when starting the car, and the warnings cleared themselves. Didn't cost me anything, just felt a bit silly afterward! My mechanic had a good laugh about it when I brought it in panicking. Could you share more details about when exactly these warnings appear? Does it happen every time you start the car or only occasionally? Also, do you have access to the specific error codes? That would help narrow things down. By the way, if it's not the same simple fix as mine, it's probably best to have a professional check it out since brake systems are pretty important!

Thanks for sharing your experience! My X2 is at 167188 KM and just had its service last month. In my case, the warnings are actually popping up out of nowhere while driving, not just at startup. Already tried the brake pedal trick you mentioned but no luck there. Yesterday, had three warning messages within a 20-minute drive, which is pretty concerning. The weird thing is, the brakes themselves feel totally normal, no changes in pedal feel or braking performance. Was hoping to avoid another trip to the shop so soon after service, but you're right, probably better safe than sorry when it comes to brakes. Just wanted to check here first in case someone had dealt with the exact same thing.

Hey again! Just wanted to follow up since your situation sounds more serious than what I initially thought. My experience with the brake pedal thing clearly isn't what's happening in your case. Actually, your symptoms remind me of what happened later with my X1, I ended up having a similar unusual warning issue about 6 months after that first incident. For me, it turned out to be a faulty wiring harness causing those unusual warnings. The connector near the brake light switch was loose and occasionally losing contact, which explained why the warnings would pop up out of nowhere during drives. Ended up costing me around 400 bucks for the repair, but at least it solved the problem completely. Since you mentioned your car just had service, maybe check if they did anything near the brake light area? Sometimes these issues can start after someone's been working in that area and didn't secure everything properly. My mechanic said it's pretty common with these models. Given that you're getting multiple warnings during a single drive, I'd definitely get it checked out soon. Even though the brakes feel normal (mine did too), it's not worth the risk. Would love to hear what they find when you get it looked at!

Thanks for the detailed follow-up! That wiring harness issue sounds exactly like what might be happening with mine. Makes total sense since the warnings are so unusual, and now that you mention it, they did replace some brake pads during my last service. I've just booked an appointment for tomorrow morning, definitely don't want to risk anything with the brakes. Really appreciate you sharing about the repair cost too, helps me know what to expect. Will let you know what they find, and hopefully it's just a loose connection like yours was. These modern cars with all their sensors can be super finicky sometimes! Thanks again for taking the time to help me figure this out.

Let our mechanics help you!
