BMW X2 A/C Failure: Dead Compressor Warning Signs

Air conditioning blows warm air

A/C System Not Engaging

Fault stored

Hey everyone! Got some A/C troubles with my 2019 BMW X2 (45,399 KM, gas engine). The system won't turn on at all and there's no cooling when it occasionally works. Diagnostic shows an error code too. Pretty sure it might be the compressor, but after a bad experience with my previous mechanic, I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar A/C issues on their X2? Would love to hear about your repair experiences and recommended mechanics. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2016 BMW X1 last summer. Initially thought it was just low refrigerant, but the diagnostic showed an undervoltage problem with the compressor. The compressor wasn't engaging properly due to a faulty relay and worn-out wiring harness. Had mine fixed at a certified BMW workshop since this was actually a serious electrical issue that could've affected other systems. The mechanic had to replace the compressor relay, fix the wiring harness, and recharge the A/C system. The whole job took about a day and a half. Based on your symptoms, it sounds very similar to what I experienced, especially the intermittent operation. My suggestion would be to have it checked at a certified BMW service center. These electrical A/C issues aren't something you want a general mechanic experimenting with, trust me. Hope this helps with your decision.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! Similar thing happened with my X1 too, and the symptoms do sound spot on. Can't remember exactly how much I ended up paying for the whole repair though, would you mind sharing what it cost you? Also, curious if you've had any other A/C issues pop up since getting it fixed? The garage I went to wants to check it again, but I'm not sure if that's really necessary.

Hey again! Happy to update you on this! The repair cost me 240 € total for fixing the undervoltage issue. Since getting it sorted at the BMW service center, my A/C has been working perfectly, no more unusual shutoffs or cooling problems. It's such a relief not having to worry about whether the A/C will work every time I start the car! About the garage wanting another check, honestly, if your A/C is working fine now, I don't see why you'd need another inspection. Mine hasn't needed any attention since that initial repair, and it's been running smoothly for months. The compressor engages properly every time now, and the cooling is consistent. Just make sure you're happy with how it's working. If you're not having any issues, I'd say skip the extra check and save your money. The undervoltage fix usually sorts out the problem completely, at least it did in my case!

Thanks for all that info! Just got back from the mechanic yesterday actually. You were spot on about the electrical issues, turned out my compressor relay was shot too. Ended up paying about the same as you did. The mechanic showed me the worn-out parts, which helped me understand why it was acting up. Funny enough, right after they fixed it, I took a long drive home and the A/C worked like a dream. Such a relief not having to worry about whether it'll work or not! Think I'll skip that follow-up check they suggested since everything's running perfectly now. Really glad I went with a certified shop instead of trying to save a few bucks at a general mechanic. Thanks again for helping me make the right call on this one. Time to enjoy my properly functioning A/C!
