Thanks so much for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know about the wiring harness being the culprit. Would you mind sharing roughly how much it cost you to get it fixed? Also curious if you've had any other electrical gremlins pop up since the repair? I'm trying to figure out if I should brace myself for more issues down the line with my X1.
Hey again! Glad I could help! Just wanted to follow up and let you know that since I got mine fixed last year, it's been working perfectly, no more electrical issues at all. The repair was actually quite straightforward and cost me 95€ to fix the faulty cable connection. Much cheaper than I initially feared! My mechanic said these electrical problems are usually isolated incidents and not typically a sign of more issues to come. Since the repair, my steering column adjusts smoothly, and I haven't had a single problem with any other electrical components. The error code hasn't come back either. I can totally understand your concern about future problems, but based on my experience, once you get this fixed, you should be good to go. Just make sure you find a good BMW specialist who knows what they're doing. It's definitely worth getting it sorted, makes such a difference having that adjustment feature working properly again! Let me know if you have any other questions!
Thanks for the follow-up! I actually went ahead and took it to a different mechanic this week. Turned out to be exactly what you described, a corroded wire connection. The repair was pretty quick and cost me less than I expected, around 100 bucks. What a relief! The mechanic was really thorough and showed me exactly what was wrong. He even cleaned up some other connections while he was in there, no extra charge. The steering column works perfectly now, smooth as butter. No more error codes either! I'm so glad I asked here first and got your advice about getting a second opinion. The new mechanic was way better than my old shop, and I'll definitely be going back to him for future repairs. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, saved me a lot of worry and probably some money too!
Hey there! I actually faced a similar issue with my 2012 BMW X3 last year. The power steering column got stuck and threw an error code too. Since you mentioned yours, I can tell you it's most likely the same problem I had, a faulty wiring connection in the steering column motor unit. In my case, the mechanic found that the cable connector had corroded and wasn't making proper contact. They had to replace the entire wiring harness for the steering column adjustment system. It wasn't a super serious repair, but definitely not something you want to leave unfixed since it affects your driving position. The job took about 3-4 hours at the shop. Got it done at a certified BMW specialist rather than the dealership. The problem hasn't come back since. I'd definitely recommend getting a second opinion, look for a shop that specializes in European cars. Hope this helps with your decision.
