Check engine light on

Hi there! Having trouble with my 2013 BMW X1 (gas, 70,545 km) and need some advice. My car won't start normally but starts when in gear, plus I'm getting a check engine light. The transmission is also acting up with rough shifting. The last mechanic I went to wasn't very helpful, so I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms, especially with the parking position? What was the diagnosis and repair cost? Any recommendations on dealing with this would be really appreciated. Thanks!

I had a similar issue with my 2016 BMW X3 last winter. Started getting rough shifts and the car would only start in gear, not in park. Turned out the shifter control module was failing, which also affected the neutral safety switch, that's why the car wouldn't start in park. Took it to the shop and diagnostic confirmed my suspicion: faulty control unit that needed replacement. It was a serious repair since this unit controls essential safety features and transmission communication. They also had to reprogram the new unit to sync with the car's computer. The whole thing took about two days to fix, but it's been working perfectly since then. From what my mechanic told me, this isn't uncommon for BMWs of this generation. Make sure you get it checked soon because driving with a faulty transmission control unit can lead to bigger problems down the line.

Hey, thanks for sharing that info about your X3! Was dealing with almost identical issues with my X1 a while back. Really helpful to know I'm not alone with these symptoms. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other quirks pop up? Just want to get an idea of what I might be looking at cost-wise and if I should expect any follow-up issues. Thanks again for the detailed explanation!

Hey there! Yeah, happy to share, I paid exactly 1000 € to get the control unit fixed, and I can tell you it was worth every penny. The parking position issue that was giving me so much grief is completely sorted now. Been driving the X3 for months since the repair without a single problem! The mechanic did a great job with the control unit replacement, and honestly, it's like driving a different car now. No more rough shifting, no more problems starting in park, everything's working exactly as it should. Haven't noticed any other issues pop up either, which is a huge relief. If you're experiencing the same symptoms, I'd definitely recommend getting it checked out sooner rather than later. The peace of mind alone is worth it, and you'll avoid any potential damage to other parts of the transmission. Trust me, I was kicking myself for not doing it earlier when the symptoms first started!

Thanks so much for all this detail! Just wanted to update you, I actually got my X1 fixed last week. You were spot on about the control unit being the culprit. My repair came in a bit higher at 1200 €, but they also found and fixed some minor electrical issues while they were at it. The funny part was when I first drove it to the shop, it decided to act up right in front of the mechanic, wouldn't start in park at all! At least that made the diagnosis pretty straightforward. The mechanic actually showed me the old control unit after they replaced it, and it was clearly worn out. Car's running like a dream now, smooth shifting, starts perfectly in any position, and that annoying check engine light is finally gone. Really glad I didn't wait any longer to get it fixed. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it really helped me make the decision to get it sorted!
