Automatic transmission does not shift as usual

Hi there! Having some serious concerns with my 2015 BMW X1 (gas engine, 64,972 km). Both transmission and check engine lights are on, and the automatic transmission is acting up, rough shifts, grinding sounds, and stuck in emergency mode. Someone suggested it might be the radiator oil pressure, but after a bad experience with my last mechanic, I'd like to hear from others who've dealt with similar symptoms. Any tips on what the actual issue might be and recommendations for getting it properly diagnosed? Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi there! I experienced something very similar with my 2018 BMW X3 last year. The symptoms you're describing match what I went through, transmission light, CEL, and that awful grinding during shifts. In my case, it turned out to be a faulty transmission control module connector. The wiring harness had some corrosion, which caused intermittent signal issues. The car would go into limp mode as a safety measure. It wasn't a major mechanical problem, but it definitely needed immediate attention. The key was getting it properly diagnosed with a BMW-specific scanner. The generic OBD readers don't always catch these transmission-specific codes accurately. When I took it to the garage, they found the issue within an hour of testing. They cleaned the connector, replaced a couple of damaged pins, and sealed it properly. I'd suggest having it checked soon though, while my issue was just electrical, those symptoms could also indicate other transmission problems if left unchecked. Best regards

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know about the control module connector, sounds similar to what I might be dealing with. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much the repair ended up costing you? And has everything been running smoothly since they fixed it, or have you had any other transmission problems?

Hey again! Great news, I finally got my X3 checked out by a mechanic after our last chat. Turned out you were right about the radiator oil pressure being the culprit! They found a bad cable connection that was causing all those scary transmission symptoms. Only cost me 95 € to fix, which was such a relief considering I was worried it might be something major with the transmission itself. Since getting it fixed, my car's been running like a dream, no more grinding, no more warning lights, and the transmission's shifting as smooth as butter. It's been about two months now without a single problem. Really glad I didn't wait any longer to get it checked out. Just goes to show that sometimes these transmission issues aren't as serious as they seem, often it's just an electrical connection playing up. Hope you get yours sorted soon! Let us know how it goes. Best of luck!

Thanks for following up! I actually just got back from the mechanic today and wanted to share what happened. Found a trustworthy shop through a 's recommendation. The mechanic hooked up their diagnostic tool and discovered it was a transmission fluid sensor that went bad. Cost me around €300 for the part and labor, which wasn't too terrible. They did a full inspection while it was there and everything else looked good. The car's running perfectly now, all the warning lights are off and the transmission is shifting smoothly again. Such a relief it wasn't anything major! It's been about a week since the repair and no issues at all. Really appreciate your help and advice earlier. Sometimes these problems sound way scarier than they actually are. At least now I know what to look out for if anything similar happens again, and I've finally found a mechanic I can trust. Thanks again for your help!
