Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know it was the heating mat, sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with right now. Mind if I ask how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything been working smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other electrical quirks pop up?
Hey again! Glad to update you on this. After getting it fixed, the seat heater has been working like a charm, absolutely no issues since then. The total repair came to 390 € for replacing the heating mat in the seat. Honestly, while it wasn't cheap, it was worth every penny to have warm seats again, especially after dealing with that frustrating on-off problem. And nope, haven't had any other electrical gremlins show up since the repair. The heating controls respond perfectly now, no more of that annoying shutdown after a few seconds. The mechanic really knew what they were doing with the BMW systems. Made me realize how important it is to have someone who's familiar with these specific models. Just make sure whoever you pick knows their way around BMW electronics, it makes a huge difference in getting it fixed right the first time! Let me know if you need any other details about the repair. Happy to share more from my experience!
Thanks so much for all this info! I actually just got back from a mechanic who specializes in European cars, and you were spot on about everything. The heating mat was indeed the culprit, and they quoted me around the same price range you mentioned. I bit the bullet and got it fixed yesterday. The whole process took about 4-5 hours, but wow, what a difference! The seat heater now works perfectly, stays on as long as I want and heats evenly. This new mechanic was great too, really knew their stuff about BMWs and explained everything clearly. The best part? They even showed me the old heating mat when they took it out, and you could actually see where it was damaged. Makes me feel much better about spending the money knowing exactly what was wrong. Thanks again for pushing me in the right direction with your experience. It really helped me make the decision to get it fixed rather than just living with the problem. Now I can finally enjoy those warm seats again!
Hey there! I had the exact same problem with my 2013 BMW X3 last winter. The heating elements in the seat mat were failing, it would turn on briefly and then shut off completely. Got the error code too. Found out it was a defective heating mat, which is actually a common issue. The entire seat pad had to be replaced since the heating element is embedded in it. Not the most complex repair, but definitely not a DIY job since they had to disassemble the whole seat. My mechanic figured it out pretty quickly because he'd seen it before in other BMWs. Took about half a day to fix. It wasn't a critical safety issue, but definitely annoying during cold weather. Just make sure whoever works on it has experience with BMW electrical systems. The new heating mat has been working perfectly for over a year now. Hope this helps with your decision.
