Thanks for sharing your experience! That sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. Would you mind telling me how much the whole repair ended up costing you? Also curious if you've had any cooling-related issues pop up since the fix? I've been quoted some pretty wild prices from different shops, so trying to get a sense of what's reasonable.

Hey there! Happy to follow up about my X3 repair situation. Just wanted to let you know that after seeing that BMW specialist I mentioned, they actually discovered the bypass valve malfunction was connected to a warranty-covered component. The best part? The repair didn't cost me anything! They handled all the paperwork with BMW, and I walked away without paying a cent. Since getting it fixed, the cooling system has been working perfectly, no more overheating issues or problems with the cabin heat. Everything's running exactly as it should. It's been such a relief, especially since I was initially worried about facing a huge repair bill. I know prices can vary wildly between shops, but definitely check if your car might still be under any extended warranty coverage before paying out of pocket. Also, if you're getting super high quotes, it might be worth getting a diagnostic from a BMW specialist first, they often catch things regular shops miss and might save you money in the long run. Really hope you get this sorted without breaking the bank!

Thanks for all the helpful info! I actually took your advice and found a BMW specialist yesterday. You won't believe what happened, turns out my issue was pretty similar to yours. The water pump was starting to fail and they caught it before it could cause more damage. The mechanic was super thorough and showed me exactly what was wrong. They replaced the pump and did a complete system flush. Wasn't cheap, but definitely better than what those other shops were quoting me. Best part is, the cabin heat is working perfectly now and no more engine temperature warnings. Really glad I asked here before going back to my old mechanic. Could've ended up with a much bigger problem on my hands. Thanks again for steering me in the right direction with this!

I can relate to your situation. Had similar symptoms with my 2015 BMW X3 last winter. Initially thought it was just low coolant, but turned out the water pump had failed, which then caused the thermostat to malfunction. This combination was causing the overheating and no cabin heat. My previous mechanic also missed the root cause, only focusing on topping up coolant. Found a certified BMW specialist who properly diagnosed it. The failed water pump had sent debris through the system, so they had to flush everything and replace both parts to fix it completely. It was definitely a serious repair job, had to leave the car at the shop for a few days. But since the fix, everything's been running perfectly for the past 8 months. These symptoms really shouldn't be ignored as they can lead to bigger engine problems. Based on your description, I'd say get it checked soon, but find a shop that specializes in BMWs. The bypass valve could be the culprit, but you'll want someone who can properly diagnose the entire cooling system.
