BMW X1 Oil Pressure Warning + Knocking, Help Needed!

Hey everyone! My 2020 BMW X1 with the gas engine has been acting up lately. The oil pressure warning light came on, accompanied by concerning engine knocking sounds. The diagnostic also showed an engine oil pressure control fault. I suspect low oil pressure might be the culprit. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear about your repair experiences and what the actual issue turned out to be. How did your mechanic resolve it? Thanks in advance.

Hey there! Had a similar issue with my 2018 BMW X3 last year. Those symptoms ring a bell, my car was making the same knocking sounds, and the oil pressure light was flashing too. Turned out the oil pump was failing. Took it to my trusted mechanic who confirmed it after running diagnostics. The repair set me back about 755 Euro, but it was worth fixing immediately to prevent any major engine damage. The job included replacing the oil pump and doing a complete oil change. Since then, my X3's been running smooth as butter with no warning lights or weird noises. Before I share more details, could you tell me your current mileage and when you last had an oil change? Also, have you noticed any oil leaks or unusual oil consumption? This info would help figure out if you're dealing with the same problem. Don't wait too long on this one, oil pressure issues can wreck your engine pretty quick if left unchecked.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My X1 just had its latest service, and with only 9866 KM on the clock, I wouldn't expect these issues so early. No oil leaks that I can spot, and consumption seems normal. The timing of those knocking sounds with the warning light definitely has me worried though. Your repair story gives me a good reference point, might be looking at the oil pump like in your case. I'll get it checked out ASAP rather than risking engine damage.

Hey again! Just saw your reply about your X1's mileage, wow, that's really low for these kinds of issues! You're right to be concerned. My X3's problems started around 45,000 KM, which made more sense timing-wise. The fact that yours is showing these symptoms so early actually makes me think it might be something different from what I experienced. Given that you've just had a service and the super low mileage, I'm wondering if it could be a faulty oil pressure sensor rather than the pump itself. That would be a much cheaper fix than what I went through! When my pump failed, the knocking was pretty consistent, but how's yours? Is it constant or does it come and go? I'd definitely push for this to be covered under warranty given the age and mileage of your car. My repair was expensive because my X3 was out of warranty, but you shouldn't have to pay for this. Let us know what the dealer says, I'm really curious now because these symptoms at such low mileage are pretty unusual. Could help other X1 owners if it turns out to be a known issue.

Thanks so much for the follow-up thoughts! You've got a really good point about the warranty, I hadn't even considered that angle. The knocking sound actually comes and goes, usually when I'm accelerating or after the engine's been running for a while. That's different from your experience, which makes me feel a bit more optimistic about the sensor theory. I've already called the dealer and they can see me tomorrow morning. They seemed quite concerned when I mentioned the symptoms, especially given the recent service and low mileage. I'll definitely push for warranty coverage and update the forum once I know what's actually causing it. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it's helped me understand what questions to ask when I take it in.
