BMW X1 Massage Seat Switch Malfunction, Help Needed

Massage seat without function

|

Fault stored

Hi everyone! My 2020 BMW X1's seat massage function is acting up. The switch doesn't respond properly, can't turn it on sometimes, and when it does work, it won't turn off. The diagnostic shows an error code related to this issue. Has anyone dealt with similar massage seat switch problems in their X1? What was the actual cause and how did your mechanic fix it? Would really appreciate hearing about your experiences and repair solutions. Thanks in advance.

Hi there! I had a similar issue with my 2018 BMW X3's massage function, I feel your pain! I've got some experience working with cars, but mostly basic maintenance stuff. Took mine to my regular workshop when it started acting up exactly like yours, unresponsive switch and unusual activation issues. Turned out it was just a faulty wiring connection to the seat control module. The mechanic had to replace some cables and check all the connectors. Cost me around 95 Euro, and it's been working perfectly since then. Before we dig deeper though, can you tell me if you've noticed any other electrical issues with the seat functions? Also, which trim level is your X1, and does this happen with both front seats or just one side? This info would help me understand if you're dealing with the same problem I had.

Just had my X1 serviced last month at 126343 KM, and I had a very similar situation with the massage function. In my case, it turned out to be a loose connection in the control module under the seat. The first signs started with the intermittent response, just like what you're describing. Have you checked if the heating function is working properly? In my experience, when the massage feature acts up, it's often related to the whole seat control unit rather than just the massage system alone. The technician might need to recalibrate the entire module after fixing the connection. The fix was pretty straightforward once they identified the real issue, and the car's been running smoothly since then. Might be worth having them check the wiring harness too, as these can sometimes get pinched under the seat.

Hey there! Yes, you're right about checking the heating function, that's actually a really good point! After I had my X3 fixed, I learned quite a bit about these seat control systems. Looking back at my experience, I remember the heating was actually a bit glitchy too, but I didn't connect the dots at first. The massage function would out of nowhere start during my drives, which was pretty annoying, especially on long trips. My mechanic mentioned that these issues often go hand in hand because they're controlled by the same module. When they fixed mine, they actually found that the wiring harness had some wear and tear from the seat movement over time. The connections weren't completely shot, but they were definitely loose enough to cause those unusual activation problems. Since having it fixed, I've had zero issues with both the massage and heating functions. Definitely get it checked soon, these things tend to get worse if left alone. In my case, waiting longer would've probably damaged the control module itself, which would've been way more expensive to replace. The whole repair was pretty quick too, only had my car in the shop for about half a day.

Thanks so much for sharing your experiences! That's really helpful info about the heating function being connected to the same system. I just checked, and you're right, my heating is also a bit inconsistent, though not as bad as the massage function. I'm glad to hear your repair was relatively quick and straightforward. Based on what you've both shared, it does sound like I'm dealing with a similar wiring issue. It's reassuring to know it might not be a major problem with the control module itself. I've already called my mechanic and booked an appointment for next week. I'll make sure to mention the heating function and ask them to check the wiring harness specifically. Hopefully, it'll be a simple fix like yours was, and I won't need to replace the entire module. Really appreciate everyone's input on this, it's definitely helped me understand what I'm dealing with. I'll update the thread once I get it fixed in case anyone else runs into the same problem!
