BMW X1 Keyless Entry Failure: Door Handle Wiring Issues

Key fob issues

|

Fault stored

Hi all! 2022 BMW X1 owner here. Having issues with keyless entry completely stopped working. Car shows battery discharge warning and some fault codes related to open circuit. Think it might be related to door handle electronics. Has anyone dealt with similar issues on their X1? Would love to hear your experience with repairs and what the actual problem turned out to be.

Hi there! Some experience with BMWs here. Had a similar issue with my 2020 BMW X3 last year. The keyless entry system completely died on me, and I got those same battery warnings. My trusted mechanic found a faulty wiring connection in the door handle sensor, basically, the cables had worked loose over time and weren't making proper contact anymore. Got it fixed for about 95 Euro, mostly labor costs to access and reconnect those tricky door handle components. Since then, everything's been working perfectly. The X3 and X1 share quite a few electrical components, so it could be the same issue. Could you share your car's mileage and whether you've noticed any other electrical quirks before this happened? Sometimes these issues can be related to other electrical gremlins in the system. Let me know and I might be able to provide more specific advice based on my experience.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I've got 174683 KM on mine and just had it serviced last month. Your solution sounds promising, good to know it might not be too expensive. Been really frustrated with this issue, especially since the car is still pretty new. Haven't noticed any other electrical issues before this started happening. Will definitely have my mechanic check those door handle connections. Would be a relief if it's just loose wiring like in your case.

Hey again! Just to follow up on your reply, yeah, that mileage is actually pretty similar to what mine was when I had the issue (around 168000 KM). It's interesting that you haven't had any other electrical issues, that's actually a good sign! Mine was exactly the same, everything else worked perfectly until the keyless thing started acting up. Just a heads up though, when my mechanic dug deeper, they found that some moisture had also gotten into the connection point, which contributed to the wire corrosion. Might be worth asking them to check for that too while they're in there. The repair ended up being super straightforward once they identified the exact spot. One thing I forgot to mention in my first response, after the fix, my mechanic suggested spraying some electrical contact cleaner in there as preventive maintenance. I've done that every six months since then, and haven't had a single issue. Keep us posted on what your mechanic finds! Always curious to see if these BMW quirks follow the same patterns.

Thanks so much for the extra details! Really appreciate the tip about the moisture and contact cleaner, definitely wouldn't have thought of that. Just booked my car in for next week, and I'll make sure to mention checking for moisture damage too. Will get some contact cleaner while I'm at it, sounds like a smart preventive measure. Actually feeling quite relieved now knowing this isn't some major system failure. Really glad I asked here, saved me a lot of worry and probably some money too! Thanks again for all your help and sharing your experience with your X3. It's super helpful to hear from someone who's dealt with and solved the same issue.

Let our mechanics help you!
