Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful, and it sounds almost identical to what I'm dealing with. Did you remember roughly how much the repair ended up costing you? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other issues pop up? Been a bit worried about potential hidden problems, so would love to hear how yours has been holding up.

Hey there! Just wanted to follow up on your questions. After getting the fuel filter heater fixed, my X3 has been running like a charm, no more sluggish starts or power issues! The repair was actually pretty reasonable, came to 95 € to fix the faulty cable connection. Honestly, I was worried it might be something more serious (and expensive), so felt quite relieved. It's been several months now, and everything's working perfectly. Cold starts are smooth, power delivery is back to normal, and fuel consumption has returned to what it should be. Haven't had any related issues pop up since. Looking back, I wish I'd gotten it checked sooner, these diesel engines really don't like it when the fuel heating system isn't working properly. Don't stress too much about hidden problems, once they sorted out the connector and wiring, it was basically good as new. Just make sure you get a proper BMW specialist to do the work. Worth every penny to have it done right!

Thanks so much for the detailed response! Just got back from the mechanic and wanted to share my experience. You were spot on, it was indeed the fuel filter heater causing all those issues. The mechanic found a damaged wiring connection, pretty similar to what you described. Got it all fixed up for about 110 bucks, which was such a relief considering I was imagining much worse scenarios! Took it for a drive this morning and what a difference! The engine fires up smoothly now, even in cold weather, and that sluggish feeling is completely gone. Fuel consumption seems to be getting back to normal too. Really glad I didn't put this off any longer, you were right about these diesel engines being sensitive to fuel heating issues. Really appreciate everyone's help here. Nothing beats getting advice from someone who's been through the same thing. Looks like I can stop worrying about major engine problems now!

I had similar issues with my 2013 BMW X3 20d. Initially thought it was something major, but turned out to be exactly what you're suspecting, the fuel filter heater. Last month at the garage, they diagnosed it after I experienced the same symptoms, poor cold starts, reduced power, and higher fuel consumption. The connector and wiring to the fuel filter heater were damaged, causing intermittent operation. The fuel wasn't being properly warmed during cold conditions, leading to those diesel-specific issues. The fix involved replacing the wiring harness and connector assembly for the fuel filter heater. While not a serious mechanical problem, it can definitely impact performance and efficiency if left unaddressed. The repair wasn't too complex, but needed proper diagnostic equipment to confirm. Make sure to get it checked at a shop that specializes in BMW diesels, they'll know exactly where to look and how to properly test the system.
