Thanks for sharing your story! That sounds exactly like what I'm experiencing. My gut was telling me it might be more than just the sensor. How much did the whole repair end up costing you? Have you noticed any other issues pop up since the fix? Really appreciate the heads up about not waiting too long, think I'll start looking for a specialist garage right away.
Hey again! Just wanted to follow up, I got my X3 fixed last week, and you'll be glad to hear it was actually less severe than my initial repair. Turned out it was indeed just a faulty exhaust temperature sensor, plus they found and fixed a small leak in the exhaust system. Total damage was 265 €, way less than what I paid for my previous manifold repair! Car's running like a dream now, fuel consumption is back to normal, no more check engine light, and the power's fully restored. Haven't spotted any other issues since the fix. The sensor was definitely the culprit in my case. Really pleased with how it turned out. Quick heads up though, if you're still having those symptoms, definitely get it checked soon. These things can sometimes be related to other problems, so it's worth having a proper diagnostic done by someone who knows BMWs inside out. Better safe than sorry with these high-tech engines!
Just wanted to update on my BMW situation. Finally got it sorted yesterday! After reading your comments, I took it to a specialist garage. You were spot on, it wasn't just the sensor. They found a small exhaust leak plus a worn-out temperature sensor. The mechanic was super thorough and showed me exactly what was wrong. Got everything fixed up, and what a difference! The car's running smoothly again, no more emergency mode, and my fuel consumption's back to normal. The whole thing cost me about 300 bucks, definitely worth every penny. The mechanic even gave me some tips about preventive maintenance to avoid similar issues in the future. Thanks again for your help. Really glad I didn't put this off any longer. It's such a relief to have my car back in proper working order!
I had a similar issue with my 2020 BMW X3 last winter. The symptoms you're describing match what I experienced, poor fuel economy, limp mode, and CEL. Initially thought it was just the sensor, but it turned out there was a crack in the exhaust manifold causing incorrect readings. The exhaust leak was messing with the O2 sensors and throwing off the entire system. Got it fixed at a garage that specializes in German cars. They replaced the manifold and a couple of sensors. It was a serious job that took two days, but worth it, car's been running perfectly since then. Haven't had a single issue with the exhaust system after the repair. If you've got those symptoms, I wouldn't wait too long to get it checked. Exhaust leaks can cause bigger problems if left unattended. The diagnostic system in these BMWs is quite sophisticated, but sometimes one issue can trigger multiple fault codes, making it tricky to pinpoint the exact problem without proper equipment.
