Error message in the speedometer

Help needed, 2020 BMW X1 Brake System Problems Having issues with my X1's brake system. Getting error messages in the dash, brakes feel weak, and there's a frequent noise from the hydraulic pump when braking. The pump seems to be running more often than normal. Thinking it might be the brake booster pressure sensor, but not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would like to hear about your repair experience and workshop solutions. What was the actual problem and how was it resolved?

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2018 BMW X3 last year (I have some experience working on cars, but mostly basic maintenance stuff). The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I dealt with. The brake pedal felt spongy, and that annoying pump noise was driving me crazy! Initially thought it was something major, but turned out the brake system wasn't properly bled after some recent brake work. Took it to my regular workshop, and they found air bubbles in the brake lines. They did a complete brake fluid flush and proper bleeding of the system. Cost me about 90 Euro, but it fixed all the issues, no more warning lights, firm brake pedal, and the pump stopped making those weird noises. Before I jump to conclusions though, could you share some more details? Has any recent work been done on the brakes? Also, what exactly does the error message say? This info would help confirm if it's the same problem I had with my X3.

Thanks for sharing that! I've got similar symptoms with my X1, currently at 88243 KM since my last service. Actually, I did have some brake work done about a month ago, they replaced the front brake pads. Your experience sounds spot on with what I'm experiencing, that annoying pump noise and spongy brake feel started shortly after that service. The error message I'm getting is "Check Brake System" in yellow on the dash. Given what you're saying about the air bubbles, I'm starting to think they might not have bled the system properly after changing the pads. That would definitely explain the symptoms, and honestly, it's a relief to hear it might not be something more serious like the brake booster I was worried about. Think I'll get it checked out at the shop this week. Your repair costs sound way better than what I was imagining for a sensor replacement!

Hey again! Yeah, after seeing your mileage and hearing about that recent brake work, I'm even more convinced it's the same issue I had with my X3. It's actually pretty common after brake pad replacement if the bleeding isn't done properly. Just to add to my previous response, when I got my brake pads changed last year, I initially thought it was the brake booster sensor too (we tend to assume the worst, right?). But the timing of your issues starting after the pad replacement is really telling. My mechanic explained that modern BMW brake systems are super sensitive to any air in the lines, and even a tiny air bubble can trigger those warnings and make the pump work overtime. Here's a tip: when you take it back to the shop, make sure they do a complete brake fluid flush, not just a quick bleed. In my case, they first tried a simple bleed which didn't solve it completely. The full flush was what finally fixed everything. The pump noise disappeared immediately, and the brake pedal got that nice, firm feel back. Let me know how it goes when you get it checked out. Pretty sure you'll be back to normal with just a proper bleeding of the system, just like mine was!

Thanks everyone for the helpful advice! After getting my X1 checked out, you were absolutely right, it was just trapped air in the brake lines from that pad replacement job last month. Took it back to the shop, and they did a complete brake fluid flush as suggested. The whole thing cost less than I expected, and now my brakes are working perfectly again. The pedal feels nice and firm, that annoying pump noise is completely gone, and no more warning lights on the dash. Such a relief it wasn't the brake booster sensor! Really grateful for the advice about getting a full flush instead of just a quick bleed, that definitely made the difference. Goes to show how important proper bleeding is after brake work. Lesson learned for next time! Thanks again for helping me avoid an unnecessary expensive repair. Would definitely recommend anyone with similar symptoms after brake work to check for air in the lines first before assuming the worst.
