BMW Steering Column Stuck? Electric Adjust Fix Guide

Hey there! Having some trouble with my 2015 BMW 6 diesel (58k km) and could use some advice. The steering column won't adjust electrically anymore, and there's an error code stored in the system. Has anyone dealt with faulty electric steering column adjustment? Got burned by a mechanic recently, so I'm a bit hesitant about where to take it. Would really appreciate hearing about your experiences and recommendations for fixing this issue. Any idea on potential costs? Thanks in advance!

Had the same problem with my 2012 BMW 5 diesel last winter. The steering column adjustment stopped working completely, wouldn't move up, down, or telescope. Turned out the wiring harness connector at the column was damaged, causing intermittent connection issues. The error code pointed to the same thing. Got it checked at a certified shop, the cables had worn down from regular movement and needed replacement. Not a major mechanical issue, but definitely needed proper diagnosis and repair. The technician had to remove some trim pieces to access and replace the harness assembly. It's not a job you'd want to DIY since it involves electrical components and proper coding afterward. Find a reputable BMW specialist who can properly diagnose and repair it. They should be able to check the error codes and inspect the wiring before starting any work. The repair itself took about 3-4 hours in my case. Hope this helps with your decision-making. Let us know how it turns out.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful since it sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. Can I ask how much the repair ended up costing you? Also, has everything been working smoothly since the fix? I'm trying to budget for this repair and want to make sure it's a long-term solution rather than a temporary fix. Appreciate the input!

Hey again! Just wanted to follow up, great news actually! I took your advice and got it sorted at a specialist shop. The final bill came to 95€, which was way less than I expected. They found it was exactly what I had with mine, just a faulty cable connection that needed fixing. Since getting it repaired last week, the steering column adjustment's been working perfectly, smooth as butter! You really nailed it about the wiring harness issue. Mine's been working flawlessly since the repair, and honestly, it's such a relief not having to mess with a stuck steering wheel anymore. For what it's worth, it was definitely worth getting it fixed properly. The shop did a thorough job, and now everything's back to normal. Really glad I could help point you in the right direction with my experience. Seems like these BMWs can have similar quirks, but at least this one's pretty straightforward to fix once you know what's wrong! Let me know if you end up getting yours fixed, would be interesting to hear if you run into the same thing.

Just wanted to update you on my BMW situation. Finally got it checked out at a reputable shop yesterday. What a relief, it wasn't nearly as bad as I'd feared! The mechanic found a loose connection in the wiring, plus some wear and tear that needed fixing. Parts and labor came to around 120€, which honestly feels like a steal compared to what I was imagining. It's funny how nervous I was about getting ripped off again, but this time everything went super smooth. The shop was really upfront about what needed doing, and they even showed me the worn parts they replaced. Been testing out the steering adjustment non-stop since I got it back, works like a charm now! Thanks again for sharing your experience, it really helped me stop putting off the repair and find a good shop to sort it out. These BMWs might be fantastic to drive, but when something goes wrong, it's good to know what you're dealing with. Next time I have an issue, I won't wait so long to get it fixed!
