BMW Power Windows Dead: Multiple System Failure Help

Fault stored

Power windows malfunction

Hi everyone! Having trouble with my 2018 BMW 2 diesel. All power windows stopped working suddenly and there's a fault code showing up. I suspect it might be a window regulator initialization failure. Has anyone dealt with something similar? What was the actual problem and how did your mechanic fix it? Looking for some real experiences before taking it to the workshop. Thanks!

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars, and I actually faced a similar issue with my 2016 BMW 1 Series diesel last year. The symptoms were exactly like yours, all power windows stopped at once, which usually points to an electrical issue rather than a mechanical one. Turned out my battery was dying and couldn't provide enough power to the system. Had to get it replaced at my regular workshop. Cost me around 290 Euro, but it fixed all the window problems and other electrical glitches that had started popping up. Before I can give you more specific advice, could you share: Are you having any other electrical issues? (Like flickering lights, slow starter), How old is your current battery? Did this happen gradually or all at once? You might want to get the battery tested before replacing any window regulators, could save you some money!

Thanks for sharing your experience! My BMW has 68871 KM and had its last service about 2 months ago. Actually, now that you mention it, I've noticed my starter has been a bit sluggish lately, especially in the mornings. The windows all stopped working pretty much at once while I was driving. Haven't had any flickering lights though. The battery is the original one from 2018, so you might be onto something there. I'll definitely get the battery checked first before diving into anything more complex. Better to start with the simpler solution!

Hey again! Yeah, those symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I experienced with my BMW. The sluggish starter is a classic sign, that's exactly how mine started. When you mentioned it's the original battery from 2018, that pretty much confirms my suspicion. These batteries typically last about 4-5 years, so yours is right in that replacement window. In my case, I initially thought it might be more complicated too, but it's funny how often it comes down to the battery. After I got mine replaced, not only did the windows start working perfectly again, but that sluggish starting disappeared completely. My mechanic told me BMWs are particularly sensitive to battery voltage drops. Quick tip from my experience, make sure whoever replaces the battery registers/codes it to the car's computer system. My skipped this step when he did his, and it caused some weird electrical issues. The proper registration helps the charging system work correctly with the new battery. Let me know how it goes after you get it checked. I'm pretty confident this will solve your issue just like it did mine!

Thanks so much for that detailed advice! I just called my local auto parts store and they can test the battery for free tomorrow. Really appreciate the tip about the battery registration, I definitely wouldn't have known about that! I'll make sure to mention it specifically when I take it in. You've saved me from potentially wasting time and money checking the window regulators first. Will update you once I get it sorted, but feeling pretty confident now that we've identified the likely culprit. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it's been super helpful!
