BMW Oil Sensor Limp Mode: Real Repair Costs Revealed

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

|

Fault stored

Hi all! My 2016 BMW 3 Hybrid has gone into limp mode with warning lights on the dash. The diagnostic shows an engine oil temperature sensor fault. With 127,665 KM on the clock, I'm a bit nervous about getting ripped off at the repair shop after a previous bad experience. Has anyone dealt with this issue before? What was your repair cost and experience? Looking for honest feedback before I commit to any repairs. Thanks in advance!

Hey there. I had a similar issue with my 2019 BMW 5 Series Hybrid last year. Engine oil temp sensor fault triggered limp mode for me too. At the garage, they found it was just a faulty cable connection to the sensor, corrosion had built up over time. The mechanic showed me where the sensor was located and how the wiring had deteriorated. Not a major repair in my case, though it initially seemed scary with all those warning lights. The fix involved cleaning the connections and replacing one damaged wire in the harness. My car had about 98,000 KM when this happened. Got it sorted in a few hours, wasn't a complex job. Just make sure they properly diagnose whether it's the sensor itself or just the connections before any parts get replaced. Have them show you what they find. Hope this helps with your situation.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know it might just be a wiring issue. Would you mind telling me roughly how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also curious if you've had any similar problems pop up since getting it fixed?

Hey again! Just wanted to follow up, since I saw your questions about the cost and whether any issues came back. The repair ended up costing me 95 € to fix the faulty cable connection. The mechanic actually showed me the corroded wiring that was causing the problem. I'm happy to report I haven't had a single problem with the oil temp sensor since getting it fixed. The car's been running perfectly fine, no more limp mode or warning lights. Looking back, I was pretty worried at first, but it turned out to be a relatively simple fix. Just make sure your mechanic properly checks the wiring connections first before jumping to replace the entire sensor. Mine was really good about explaining everything and showing me exactly what was wrong. Definitely saved me from unnecessary parts replacement. Hope you get yours sorted just as easily! Let me know how it goes.

Thanks so much for all the details! I took my car to the mechanic yesterday and you were right, it turned out to be a wiring issue. The mechanic found corrosion in the connector, similar to what you described. They cleaned it up, replaced a small section of damaged wire, and everything's working perfectly now. Got charged 120 € for the work, which wasn't too bad considering how worried I was initially. The mechanic was really transparent, showed me the corroded parts and explained everything clearly. Such a relief after my previous bad experience with repairs! The car's running smoothly now, no more warning lights or limp mode. Really glad I asked here before going in, helped me know what to expect and not get oversold on unnecessary repairs. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it definitely helped me feel more confident dealing with this issue!
