BMW M4 Brake Crisis: Multiple Warning Lights Alert

Spongy/unresponsive brakes

Help needed, M4 brake system going crazy! Hey all! I've got a 2016 BMW M4 (159k km) and I'm having some concerning brake issues. The brake pedal feels weird and spongy, plus I'm getting multiple warning lights including ABS, ESP, and brake indicators all at once. Already had a bad experience with my previous mechanic, so I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms? What was the actual problem and where did you get it fixed? Could it just be worn brake pads or something more serious? Thanks in advance for any insights!

Hey there. I had similar warning lights show up on my 2019 BMW M2 Competition last year. From my garage experience, these multiple warning lights together usually point to an electrical issue rather than just worn brake pads. In my case, it turned out to be an undervoltage problem affecting the ABS module. The battery was struggling to maintain proper voltage, which made the brake system act up. The pedal got spongy because the brake assist wasn't getting enough power to function properly. It was actually quite serious and needed immediate attention, you don't want to risk brake failure. The fix involved replacing the battery and recalibrating the ABS module. The garage also had to do a full system diagnostic to ensure no other components were damaged. If you're getting the same symptoms, I'd strongly suggest taking it to a certified BMW specialist. These electrical gremlins in the brake system aren't something you want a general mechanic experimenting with.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the brake system issues. That ABS module/battery problem sounds exactly like what I might be dealing with. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much the whole repair set you back? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other quirks pop up? Trying to get an idea of what I'm in for, both cost-wise and whether this is likely to be a one-and-done fix. Thanks!

Hey again! Just to update you, I got it sorted last week and I'm glad to say it was pretty much identical to what I suspected. The undervoltage issue was causing all those warning lights and brake weirdness. Cost me 240 € to fix, which honestly wasn't as painful as I was expecting for a BMW repair! I can happily report that everything's running perfectly now, the brake pedal feels solid again, and all those annoying warning lights have disappeared. No new quirks or issues have shown up since the repair, so it seems it was definitely a one-and-done fix. The mechanic also noticed my brake pads were getting worn and sorted those out while they were at it. Trust me, it's such a relief to have it fixed properly. The car feels like new again, and I can actually enjoy driving without worrying about the brakes acting up. If you're experiencing the same symptoms, I'd say you're probably looking at a similar repair job. Just make sure you get a proper BMW specialist to look at it, it makes all the difference!

Just wanted to update you all on my brake system situation. Finally took my M4 to a certified BMW specialist last week, and wow, what a difference proper diagnosis makes! Turned out you were spot on, it was indeed an electrical issue causing all those warning lights and the spongy brake feel. The battery was on its last legs, affecting the ABS module. Got everything fixed up, including a new battery and system recalibration. Cost was pretty reasonable at around 300, plus they spotted and replaced my worn brake pads while they were at it. The car feels completely different now, brakes are responsive, warning lights are gone, and I can finally enjoy driving without constantly worrying about the brake system failing. No other issues have popped up since the repair, which is a huge relief. Thanks again for steering me in the right direction. Should've gone straight to a BMW specialist instead of wasting time with my previous mechanic. Sometimes paying a bit more for expertise is totally worth it!
