BMW M3 Warning Lights & Heavy Steering: Common Fix Needed

Vibrating/shaking steering wheel

|

Power steering without function

Hi all! Having trouble with my 2020 BMW M3. Multiple warning lights are popping up on the dash (ESP/ABS/brake/steering), steering feels heavy, and the wheel vibrates quite a bit. My initial guess is a faulty steering angle sensor. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear about your repair experiences and what the actual issue turned out to be. Did your workshop manage to fix it in one go? Thanks in advance!

Hi! I have some experience working on cars and had a similar issue with my 2018 BMW M4. Those warning lights combo sounds awfully familiar, it was a major headache! Took it to my regular workshop and yes, it turned out to be the steering angle sensor coding that was acting up. They recalibrated and recoded it, which fixed all those warning lights and the heavy steering feel. Cost me about 195 Euro but at least it was sorted in one visit. Would be helpful to know: How many miles/km on your car? Did this start suddenly or gradually? Any recent work done on the suspension or steering? The symptoms you describe are spot on with what I experienced. Let me know those details and I can share more specific insights about what to watch out for.

Thanks for the detailed response! I've got 88078 KM on the clock, and this started pretty suddenly after my latest service about two weeks ago. No recent suspension work though. Really helpful to hear about your experience with the M4, sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. Did your steering also feel noticeably heavier on one side compared to the other? Thinking I should probably take it to the dealership since it's acting up right after the service.

Hey again! Yeah, I definitely remember my M4 having a similar uneven steering feel, it was much heavier turning right than left. Since you mentioned it started after your service, that rings a bell. My issue actually popped up after a routine service too, which makes me think the sensor might have been disturbed during the work. I'd absolutely recommend taking it back to the dealership in your case. When I had mine fixed, the workshop explained that sometimes these sensors can get misaligned during routine maintenance if they're not careful. Since it's so close to your service, they might even sort it under warranty. Quick tip from my experience, make sure they perform a full calibration after fixing the sensor. My first attempt at fixing it didn't stick because they skipped that step. Had to go back a second time to get it properly calibrated. The good news is that once it's properly fixed, it should be completely back to normal. My M4's been running perfectly since the repair, no more warning lights or steering issues. Let me know how you get on with the dealer, interested to hear if it's the same root cause!

Thanks so much for the follow-up! Really appreciate the detailed insight, especially about the calibration step, that's super helpful to know. I've actually just booked it in with the dealership for tomorrow morning. Definitely going to mention the calibration thing to them and make sure they don't skip that step. Interesting that yours also had the same uneven steering feel. Makes me feel better knowing I'm not just imagining things! Since it started right after the service like yours did, I'm hoping they'll cover it under warranty. I'll push for that given the timing. Really glad I asked here, your experience with the M4 has been invaluable. I'll probably update the thread once it's fixed to let others know what the dealership finds. Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience and tips!
