Thanks for your detailed reply! Last service was done about 3 months ago at 175192 KM, and yes, I'm actually hearing some clunking noise from the rear right when going over bumps. The suspension feels notably softer on that side too. The error codes I'm getting are 580A and 581B, both seem related to the self-leveling system. Just really want to fix this before it gets worse, especially since I've kept this M3 in pretty good shape over the years. The struts were replaced about 50k km ago, but I'm guessing this might be a different issue? Really appreciate the input based on your M5 experience, seems like it could be something similar. Keeping my fingers crossed it's just the control rod like in your case!
Hey again! Thanks for those extra details about your M3, those symptoms sound exactly like what I dealt with on my M5! The clunking noise from the rear right is really familiar, had the same thing before I got mine fixed. The error codes you're getting (580A and 581B) are actually the same ones I had. And just like you mentioned about your struts, I had replaced mine about 45k km before these issues started showing up. In my case, it wasn't related to the strut replacement at all. When my mechanic dug deeper, he confirmed it was definitely the control rod on the level sensor, just as I suspected based on the symptoms. The cool thing was that once we replaced that part, all the issues cleared up at once: the clunking stopped, suspension firmed up evenly, and those pesky warning lights disappeared. Given how similar your symptoms are to what I experienced (especially that rear right clunking), I'd bet you're dealing with the same issue. Honestly, it's a pretty common problem on these models after they hit around 170-180k km. If you want my advice, get it checked out soon, it's not super expensive to fix if it is the control rod, but leaving it too long can put extra stress on other suspension components. Let me know how it goes, always interested in helping out fellow BMW owners!
Thanks so much for all the helpful information! Really relieved to hear it might just be the control rod issue, definitely less scary than I was imagining. Your experience with almost identical symptoms and error codes is super reassuring. I've actually already called my mechanic and booked it in for next week. Showed him your messages about the control rod problem and he agreed it sounds spot-on, especially given the mileage and symptoms. He even quoted me a similar price range to what you paid. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience in such detail. It's saved me a lot of worry and probably some money too! Will definitely update you once it's fixed, fingers crossed it'll be as straightforward as your repair was. Thanks again for all the help!

What is this error code?
The error codes 580A and 581B are related to the self-leveling suspension system in BMWs. These codes typically indicate issues with the height control system, such as a faulty level sensor or control rod. It's advisable to inspect the control rod and sensor for any signs of wear or damage. If you're experiencing symptoms like uneven suspension or warning lights, addressing these codes promptly can prevent further suspension issues. Let me know if you have any more questions or need further assistance!
Hey there! I have some experience working on BMWs. Had a similar issue with my 2003 BMW M5 last year. Those symptoms sound very familiar, I also had warning lights and uneven stance issues. Turned out the control rod on the level sensor was defective on my car. Had to take it to my regular mechanic who specializes in German cars. The repair set me back about 110 Euro, but it fixed all those issues, warning lights went away, headlights back to normal position, and car sits perfectly level now. Before I share more specific details that might help, could you share: Does the car make any unusual noises when going over bumps? Have you checked if the suspension feels softer on any particular corner? Are there any specific error codes you can share? Having worked on a couple of BMWs (also owned a 5-series before), these details would help me give you better guidance on what might be going on with your M3.
