BMW M2 Throttle Issues: Symptoms and Solutions Guide

Hey everyone! My 2018 BMW M2 has been acting up lately. The engine jerks, throttle response is weak, and it's drinking more fuel than usual. Also having trouble starting it up. I suspect it might be a faulty throttle valve, but I'd like to hear from others who've dealt with similar symptoms. Has anyone had this fixed? What was the actual problem and how did your mechanic resolve it? Really interested in your repair experiences and costs involved. Thanks in advance for any insights.

Hey there! I've dealt with something very similar on my 2016 BMW M4 (also owned an M3 before). I've got some experience working with cars, mainly basic maintenance and troubleshooting. From what you're describing, it sounds exactly like what I faced last year. My symptoms were identical, jerky acceleration, poor throttle response, and higher fuel consumption. Turned out to be a defective accelerator pedal module. Got it fixed at my regular workshop, took them about 2 hours to diagnose and replace it. Cost me 205 Euro total, and the car's been running like a charm since then. Could you share more details about when these symptoms started and if you've noticed any warning lights on the dash? Also, how many miles/kilometers are on your M2? This info would help determine if we're dealing with the same issue.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My M2 just hit 83,859 KM after the latest service. No warning lights yet, but the symptoms started about two weeks ago. Initially thought it was just bad fuel, but it's getting worse. Really helpful to know about the accelerator pedal module, that wasn't even on my radar! Did your car also have a slight delay when starting up? I'm trying to gather as much info as possible before heading to the workshop. Thanks again!

Hey again! Yeah, now that you mention the starting issue, my M4 definitely had that same delay when starting up. It's like there was a slight hesitation before the engine would fully engage. What you're describing is nearly identical to what I experienced, especially since it's getting progressively worse, just like mine did. The symptoms starting after your latest service is interesting, that's exactly when mine began acting up too. The workshop actually told me that sometimes these issues can pop up right after routine maintenance, though it's usually just coincidental timing. Just to add to my previous response, before I got the accelerator pedal module replaced, I also initially thought it was the throttle valve like you did. My mechanic tested both, and while the throttle valve was actually fine, the accelerator pedal module was the culprit. The entire diagnosis process was pretty straightforward once they hooked up the diagnostic tool. Given that your M2 has about 84K on the clock (mine was at 79K when this happened), and the symptoms match up perfectly, I'd bet good money it's the same issue. Would definitely recommend getting it checked out soon before it gets worse. The fix isn't too expensive and it'll save you from that annoying jerking and the extra fuel consumption.

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! It's really reassuring to hear that your M4 had such similar symptoms, right down to the starting delay. I'm honestly relieved it might just be the accelerator pedal module rather than something more serious. The timing after the service is definitely an interesting coincidence too. You've been super helpful with all this info, and I'm feeling much more confident about heading to the workshop now. I'll definitely have them check the accelerator pedal module first, and it's good to know the diagnostic process shouldn't be too complicated. That repair cost sounds way better than what I was imagining for a throttle valve replacement! Think I'll book it in for next week before it gets any worse. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience in such detail, you've saved me a lot of worry and probably some money too! Will let you know how it turns out once it's fixed.

Since the throttle valve has been recently replaced, it's important to check if it was installed correctly and if all connections are secure. A loose connection or a vacuum leak could cause the engine to stall. I recommend inspecting the throttle body connections and checking for any vacuum leaks around the intake manifold. If the issue persists, it might be worth having a mechanic perform a diagnostic scan to identify any error codes. Keep monitoring the situation and let us know if you notice any other symptoms.
