BMW M2 Temperature Sensor Failure Disables Climate Controls

A/C System Not Engaging

Hey all, having some weird issues with my 2018 M2. The temperature readings are dead, climate control is completely unresponsive, and mirror heating won't work. The spray nozzles are freezing up in cold weather too. I suspect it's the outside temperature sensor acting up, and there's an error code stored. Has anyone dealt with something similar? Really interested to hear what the fix was and how much time it took at the shop. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I have some experience working on BMWs and had a similar issue with my 2020 M4 about six months ago. The symptoms were exactly like yours, temp readings weren't working, climate control went dead, and my heated features were acting up. Turned out it was just a faulty wiring connection to the external temperature sensor. The plug had some corrosion and wasn't making proper contact. Took it to my regular workshop, they diagnosed it pretty quickly. They cleaned the connection and replaced the damaged cable. Total bill was around 95 Euro, and the car was ready in about 2 hours. Everything's been working perfectly since then. Before I can give more specific advice, could you tell me if you're getting any specific error codes? Also, when did these symptoms first appear, was it sudden or gradual? This would help narrow down if you're dealing with the same issue I had.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My M2 is at 37138 KM since my last service. Honestly, the issues started quite suddenly, just woke up one morning and boom, everything was dead. I'm getting the "Outside Temperature Sensor Malfunction" error code. Your situation sounds exactly like what I'm experiencing, and it's reassuring to hear it might just be a wiring issue. I'll definitely get it checked out by my mechanic. Really helpful to know it was a relatively quick and inexpensive fix in your case. Did you notice any warning signs before everything stopped working completely?

Hey again! Yeah, actually now that you mention it, looking back there were a few subtle signs before my M4 completely gave up. About a week before everything died, I noticed the temperature readings would occasionally flicker or show obviously wrong temperatures, like showing -5 degrees when it was clearly much warmer. I just didn't think much of it at the time. The mileage on my car was pretty similar to yours, around 35000 KM, when it happened. Getting the same error code too, definitely sounds like we had the identical issue. Since you mentioned it just died suddenly, it's very likely you've got the same corroded connection I had. Just a heads up, after they fixed mine, the mechanic recommended checking the sensor connections during regular maintenance to prevent this from happening again. Been doing that and haven't had any problems since. Six months on, all systems are still working perfectly. If you're getting the same error code I got, it's probably going to be a similarly straightforward fix. Just make sure your mechanic checks the wiring thoroughly, in my case, they initially thought they might need to replace the whole sensor unit, which would've been way more expensive. But yeah, turned out just cleaning and replacing that corroded bit of cable did the trick.

Thanks so much for all these details, really good to know about those early warning signs with the temperature readings! I actually think I might have noticed something similar but just brushed it off. Will definitely mention this to my mechanic when I take it in. Super relieved it's likely just a wiring issue and not something more serious with the sensor unit itself. I've already booked it in for tomorrow morning, and I'll make sure to ask them to check the connections properly before jumping to replacing anything major. Really appreciate you taking the time to share all this info, it's exactly what I needed to know. Will definitely add those sensor connections to my regular maintenance checklist too. Thanks again for all the help!
