BMW M2 Seat Controls Dead: Common Causes and Fixes

Hey all, having trouble with my 2018 BMW M2. Both manual seat adjustment and memory function stopped working completely. Got it scanned and there's an error code related to the electric seat system. Has anyone dealt with similar seat control issues on their M2? Would love to hear what the actual problem was and how your mechanic fixed it. Let me know what your repair experience was like and what parts needed replacement.

Hey there! Got some experience with BMWs, though I'm not a pro mechanic. I had a very similar issue with my 2016 BMW M4 last year. The seat adjustments completely died on me too, super annoying! Took it to my regular workshop and turned out it was just a faulty wiring connection to the seat control module. They had to remove the seat to access it, but it was basically just reconnecting and securing some loose cables. Cost me 95 Euro and about an hour of work. Been working perfectly since then. Before jumping to conclusions though, could you tell me if you're getting any other electrical issues? Also, does your M2 make any noise at all when you try to adjust the seats? This info would help determine if you're dealing with the same problem I had. Have you checked the fuses yet? That's always a good first step before heading to the shop. BTW, keep in mind these electronic gremlins can sometimes be tricky to diagnose, so having a BMW specialist look at it might be worth it.

Thanks for sharing your M4 experience! My M2 (130823 KM) is pretty silent when I press the controls, no clicking, humming, or any response at all. Just had it serviced last month and everything else electrical is working fine. No other weird symptoms. Haven't checked the fuses yet, honestly, that's a good call. Was hoping to avoid a shop visit, but you're probably right about needing a specialist. These fancy seats are great when they work, but such a pain when they act up! Hoping it's just a wiring issue like yours and not something more serious. Would you recommend having both seats checked even though only one is acting up? Just trying to avoid another trip to the shop if this happens again with the other seat.

Hey again! Thanks for the follow-up about your M2. Based on what you're describing, absolutely no sound at all, it does sound pretty similar to what I experienced with my M4, though mine at least made a faint click. I'd definitely recommend getting both seats checked while they're at it. When I had mine fixed, I actually asked them to inspect both sides, and they found some wear on the other seat's wiring too. Not bad enough to cause problems yet, but it probably would've failed eventually. It's mostly labor cost anyway, so might as well have them do both while they're in there. Quick tip though, before you head to the shop, do try checking those fuses! The fuse box location should be in your manual. I actually feel a bit silly for not mentioning this in my first reply, but make sure you check both fuse boxes (there's usually more than one). On these BMWs, the seat fuses can sometimes be tricky to spot in the diagram. Let me know what you find with the fuses. If that doesn't sort it, a proper diagnostic at a BMW specialist is your best bet. They'll have the right tools to properly trace the electrical issue, whether it's wiring or a failed module.

Thanks so much for the detailed advice! Just checked both fuse boxes and all the seat-related fuses look good, no blown ones. Guess I'll be making that workshop appointment after all. Really appreciate the tip about getting both seats checked, totally makes sense to prevent future headaches. You've been super helpful! Will definitely have them inspect everything while they're working on it. Planning to call the specialist tomorrow morning to schedule it in. Never thought I'd be so stressed about a car seat not moving, but here we are! Will update you once I know what the actual problem is. Fingers crossed it's just a wiring issue like yours and not something more expensive!
