BMW M2 Misfire Mystery: Help with Power Loss Issues

Loss of engine power

|

Engine hard to start

Fault stored

Hey everyone! My 2023 BMW M2 has been acting up lately. Having issues with rough starts, engine misfiring, and noticeable power loss. Scanner shows some error codes too. I suspect it might be a faulty camshaft sensor, but want to be sure before proceeding. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their M2? Curious to hear about your repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. Looking forward to your insights!

I've got some experience with BMWs (some experience with repairs). Had a similar issue with my 2021 BMW M4 last year. Those symptoms sound exactly like what I dealt with, rough starts, misfires, and the power just wasn't there. Initially thought it was something major, but turned out to be just a loose connection in the camshaft sensor wiring harness. Took it to my workshop, and they diagnosed it pretty quickly. They found a damaged wire and connector going to the sensor. The fix was straightforward, they replaced the wiring and connector, which cost me about 95 Euro. Car's been running perfectly since then. Before you proceed, could you share: What error codes you're getting? Does it happen more when the engine is cold or warm? Have you noticed any Check Engine light behavior? This would help determine if you're dealing with the same issue I had.

Hey, Thanks for the detailed info. Having a similar situation with my M2, and your input is super helpful. I'm at 22451 KM and just had my latest service done, but these symptoms started showing up recently. The error codes in my case turned out to be related to the fuel injection system rather than the camshaft sensor. Had it checked by a certified mechanic who noticed that one of the fuel injectors wasn't performing optimally. The symptoms were nearly identical to what Tom's describing. What's interesting is that the issues were more pronounced during cold starts in my case. Maybe worth checking both the sensor connections AND the fuel system before jumping to conclusions. Let us know what you find out.

Thanks for sharing that about your M2! You know what's funny, after my initial response about the camshaft sensor wiring, I actually ended up having a similar fuel injector issue in my M4 a few months later. Really makes me wish I'd checked the fuel system first! The symptoms were so similar that it's really easy to mix them up. In my case, both issues showed up with those rough starts and misfires. But looking back, there was a slight difference, the fuel injector problem had this subtle ticking sound during idle that the sensor issue never had. Totally agree about checking both. When my fuel injector acted up, it cost me a bit more than the sensor fix, around 400 Euro for parts and labor. But honestly, it was worth every penny. The car runs like a dream now. My fuel injector issues were definitely worse when the engine was cold too. Might be worth paying attention to that pattern. Keep us updated on what you find!

Hey, Thanks so much for all the detailed feedback! You guys have been incredibly helpful. Just got back from the mechanic, and guess what? It turned out to be a combination of issues. The main culprit was indeed a faulty fuel injector. But they also found a loose connection in the wiring harness, similar to what he initially experienced. The cold start observations were spot-on, my issues were definitely worse first thing in the morning. The ticking sound mentioned during idle? Had that too! Can't believe I didn't mention it earlier. Total repair came to about 550 Euro, which included both fixes and a thorough diagnostic check. The car's running beautifully now, smooth starts, no misfires, and the power's back to normal. Really appreciate you both sharing your experiences. It helped me have a much more informed conversation with my mechanic. Thanks again for all the help!
