BMW M2 Ignition Coil Symptoms: Check Before Stalling

Hey there! Looking for advice on potential ignition coil issues with my 2022 BMW M2 (114,128 km). My engine's been acting up lately, stuttering during acceleration, stalling when idle, and the check engine light just popped on. My last mechanic visit wasn't great, so I'm a bit hesitant to go back. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms with their M2? What was the actual problem and did you find a reliable fix? Any input would be really helpful. Thanks!

Hey! I can relate to this. Had similar issues with my 2019 BMW M4 last winter. Started with the same symptoms, rough acceleration, unusual stalling, and the dreaded check engine light. Took it to my regular shop and it turned out one of the ignition coil cables had a bad connection, plus two of the coils were failing. This wasn't just a minor problem, ignition system issues can really damage your engine if left unchecked. In my case, they had to replace all the ignition coils as preventive maintenance, plus fix the wiring harness connection. It was quite a serious job since they had to partially dismantle the engine cover and intake manifold to access everything properly. Been running smooth for about 15,000 km since the fix. I'd strongly suggest getting it checked out soon, these symptoms typically don't fix themselves and usually get worse. Best to catch it early before it leads to more engine damage.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That definitely sounds similar to what I'm dealing with. I've been worried about potential engine damage too, so hearing about your successful fix is reassuring. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything been running perfectly since then, or have you noticed any other quirks?

Hey again! Just an update since you asked about the costs, I actually got lucky with mine. It ended up being just a defective ignition coil with a bad cable connection, which was way simpler than what I initially feared. The total bill came to 95 € for fixing the connection, so much cheaper than I expected! And honestly, it's been running like a dream since then, no more stuttering, stalling, or any of that nerve-wracking stuff. The engine's super smooth now, just like when I first got the car. Looking back, I was probably making it sound more dramatic than it was in my first reply, sorry about that! Sometimes car issues can really get you worried, you know? Just a heads up though, prices might vary depending on what exactly needs fixing. I got lucky with just needing a simple repair, but if you need full coil replacements like I thought I did initially, it could be a different story. The main thing is getting it checked out before it turns into something bigger. Trust me, the peace of mind is worth it!

Thanks for the detailed follow-up! Just wanted to let you know I finally got my car checked out yesterday. Turns out my situation was a bit different, had two completely burnt-out coils and some minor wiring issues. The repair set me back 280 € with parts and labor, but honestly, it was worth every penny. The car's running beautifully now. The funny part was watching the mechanic's face when he first checked it, he couldn't believe I'd been driving around with it in that condition! Got super lucky finding this new shop too. The guy really took the time to explain everything and even showed me the old parts. Way better experience than my last mechanic. Thanks again for pushing me to get it checked out quickly. You were right about catching it early, mechanic said it could've gotten much worse if I'd kept putting it off. Really appreciate all your help!
