BMW M2 Fan Failure Causing Overheating & Limp Mode

Overheating

Hey all! My 2021 BMW M2 (186k km) keeps overheating and running in limp mode. The electric fan seems to be the culprit, but my last mechanic experience was terrible and I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar cooling system issues on their M2? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair cost? Really appreciate any insights! Thanks in advance

Hey there! Had similar issues with my 2018 BMW M4 last year. The electric fan wasn't spinning properly, but the real problem turned out to be a faulty wiring harness connection to the fan control module. The connectors had corroded and weren't making proper contact. Got it checked at a BMW specialist. They found the issue during diagnostics, it wasn't just the fan itself but the electrical connection causing intermittent failures. They had to replace the wiring harness and clean the connector pins. Not a super expensive fix compared to replacing the entire fan assembly. Look for a certified BMW specialist rather than a general mechanic. This kind of electrical issue needs someone who knows these cars well. Overheating and limp mode are serious symptoms that need quick attention to prevent engine damage. Best of luck sorting it out.

Hey, thanks a lot for sharing your experience with the wiring harness issue! I've been looking at similar problems on various M2 forums and your situation sounds really familiar. Would you mind sharing roughly how much you ended up paying for the fix? Also curious if you've had any cooling-related problems since getting it repaired? My car's been making me pretty nervous lately and I'd like to have an idea of what I'm getting into cost-wise before heading to a specialist.

Hey again! Good news, Since getting the repair done, I haven't had a single cooling issue. The electric fan's been working perfectly! It turned out to be exactly what I thought, just a bad cable connection that needed fixing. The repair was pretty reasonable too, only 95€ for sorting out the faulty connector and cleaning up the connection points. I totally understand being nervous about these issues, I was too! But honestly, once they found and fixed the actual problem (which was way simpler than I initially feared), everything's been running smoothly. The temperature gauge stays exactly where it should, no more limp mode, and the fan kicks in normally now. If your symptoms are similar to what I experienced, you might be looking at the same kind of straightforward fix. Just make sure you get it checked soon, running hot isn't good for these engines. A proper BMW specialist should be able to diagnose it quickly since it's a fairly common issue. Let me know how it goes when you get it sorted!

Thanks so much for the detailed info! I finally got my car checked out at a certified BMW specialist yesterday. Turns out it wasn't just the wiring, my fan motor was actually failing. The repair was pricier than yours at around 400 for parts and labor, but honestly, it was worth every penny. The mechanic was super professional and explained everything clearly. The best part? No more overheating! The car's running perfectly now, maintaining proper temperature even in heavy traffic. It's such a relief not having to constantly watch that temperature gauge anymore. Really grateful for your advice about going to a specialist. They diagnosed the problem in no time and fixed it right the first time, way better than my previous mechanic experience. Should've done this weeks ago instead of worrying about it! Thanks again for helping me make the right call on this one.
