BMW M2 Exhaust Flap Control Failure, What's Going On?

Loud engine when cold

Hey everyone! Having some trouble with my 2021 BMW M2. The exhaust has suddenly become much louder than normal, especially during cold starts. The manual exhaust flap control isn't responding anymore, and there's an error code stored in the system. Has anyone dealt with similar exhaust flap issues on their M2? Particularly interested in hearing about repair experiences and workshop solutions. What was the actual problem in your case?

Hi there! I've got some experience with cars, and I actually faced a similar issue with my 2019 BMW M4 last year. The symptoms were exactly like what you're describing, super loud exhaust and unresponsive flap control. Took it to my regular workshop and they diagnosed a faulty actuator in the exhaust flap system. The whole repair, including parts and labor, set me back around 190 Euro. They replaced the actuator and recalibrated the system, fixed the problem completely. Could you share what error code you're getting? Also, did you notice any weird noises before this started happening? This info would help me confirm if it's the same issue I had. Before going to the workshop, I tried resetting the system myself but that didn't help. If you're experiencing the exact same symptoms, it's likely the actuator, but best to have it properly diagnosed.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I've got the same exact error code P145A showing up. Just had my service done at 172867 KM, and this started happening about two weeks after. No weird noises before, it just suddenly went full-time loud mode one morning. Really appreciate the heads up about the actuator, sounds like that might be my culprit too. At least it's good to hear it's a relatively straightforward fix. Guess I'll be booking it in soon!

Hey again! After seeing your error code P145A, I'm even more convinced it's the same issue I had with my M4. It's actually pretty common for these actuators to act up around that mileage. Mine started acting up around 165000 KM, so pretty similar to yours. The timing of yours failing right after the service is interesting, could be just coincidence though, as mine did it completely out of nowhere. The good news is that my fix has held up perfectly for over a year now, no issues whatsoever. Quick tip: when you take it in, make sure they check the wiring harness too. My mechanic found some minor corrosion on the connectors while doing the actuator replacement. They cleaned it up as part of the job, but it's worth mentioning to whoever works on yours. By the way, did you notice if it's more pronounced in certain driving modes? With mine, it was particularly bad in Sport+ mode before I got it fixed. Let me know how the repair goes, curious to see if it's exactly the same issue!

Thanks for that detailed follow-up! Yeah, it's definitely more noticeable in Sport+ mode, practically sounds like a race car now! I checked with the dealership about the service timing, and they assured me the exhaust system wasn't touched during the routine maintenance, so you're probably right about it being just coincidence. Really appreciate the tip about the wiring harness, I'll definitely mention that when I take it in. I've actually already booked it for next week since I don't want to risk any additional damage. The price you mentioned seems reasonable too, way better than I was fearing! I'm honestly relieved to hear your fix has lasted over a year. These kinds of issues can sometimes be recurring headaches, so that's really reassuring. I'll definitely update this thread once it's fixed, might help others who run into the same problem. Thanks again for all the help, really cleared up my concerns about what I'm dealing with!
