Thanks for sharing your experience with the M4! That's really helpful. I'm going through the exact same thing with my M2 right now and it's good to know it's likely just the backup battery. Do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything been working smoothly since you got it fixed?
Hey there! Happy to help with the cost info. I paid 110 € for the whole repair, which honestly wasn't as bad as I initially feared. And yes, everything has been working perfectly since getting it fixed! The emergency call system is back to normal, and that annoying battery drain warning is completely gone. Just to give you peace of mind, it's been several months now since I had it repaired, and I haven't had a single issue with the emergency call system. The certified shop did a great job diagnosing and fixing the problem. They really knew what they were doing with these backup battery replacements. For the price, I'd say it's definitely worth getting it sorted properly rather than letting it drag on. Trust me, it's such a relief not having that warning message pop up anymore!
Thanks so much for that detailed reply! You're absolutely right, I went ahead and got it fixed yesterday at a certified shop, and I'm really glad I did. The whole experience was much better than my previous mechanic visit. They had it done in about the same time as yours, just under 2 hours, and charged me pretty much the same too. The technician showed me the old backup battery and explained everything, definitely needed replacing! It's such a relief not seeing that warning light anymore. They did the software update as well, and the whole system's working perfectly now. Funny how we worry about these repairs sometimes, but it turned out to be pretty straightforward. The emergency call system is back to normal, and I feel much better knowing this important safety feature is working properly again. Thanks again for helping me make the decision to get it sorted!
Had the same issue on my 2019 BMW M4. The emergency battery was completely drained and needed replacement. Initially thought it was just a warning glitch, but the diagnostic showed the backup battery was dead. It's actually a separate battery from the main one, specifically for the emergency call system. Had it fixed at a certified shop. The job took about 2 hours, they had to remove some interior panels to access the emergency call module. They also updated the system software as part of the service. Not a complex repair, but definitely needs proper diagnostic equipment to verify it's fixed correctly. The low mileage doesn't matter much here, these backup batteries can fail regardless of how much you drive. It's more about battery age. Would recommend getting it sorted soon, as the emergency call system is a crucial safety feature.
