BMW M2 Electronic Brake Nightmare: Multiple Systems Failing

Electical handbrake is not working

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Hey everyone! Having some serious issues with my 2018 BMW M2 (172k km) and need some advice. My electronic parking brake completely stopped working, and now multiple driver assistance systems are failing too. The dashboard is lit up like a Christmas tree, especially the speedometer warning light. Can't even use the hill start assist anymore. Had a not-so-great experience with my previous mechanic, so I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar electronic parking brake problems on their M2? What was the solution and how much did it cost you? Looking for recommendations on reliable shops that know their way around BMW electronics. Thanks in advance!

Had the same issue on my 2015 BMW M4. Electronic parking brake failed completely, triggering multiple system warnings. Turns out the electric motor in the brake caliper was defective, causing a chain reaction with other electronic systems. Took it to a garage where they diagnosed failed actuator motors in both rear calipers. This wasn't just a minor problem, the entire brake module needed replacement. The caliper motors were corroded and seized, which is apparently a known issue in these models. They had to replace both rear electronic parking brake actuators and reset the whole system. The job took about 4-5 hours because they needed to bleed the brake system and recalibrate all the electronics. After the fix, all the warning lights cleared up and the assistance systems started working normally again. This isn't something you want to postpone, it's a serious safety issue affecting multiple vehicle systems. Best to get it checked by a certified BMW specialist who has experience with these electronic systems.

Thanks for sharing your experience. That definitely sounds similar to my situation. Would you mind telling me how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also curious if you've had any other electronic issues pop up since getting it fixed? My wallet's already crying thinking about this repair bill.

Hey there, just wanted to follow up about the costs. After I took my M4 to the mechanic, they sorted out the Electronic parking brake malfunction completely. The total came to 505 € for replacing the defective electric motor in the brake caliper. I know it's not cheap, but honestly, it was worth every penny because everything's working perfectly now. The good news is I haven't had any other electronic gremlins show up since the repair, and it's been smooth sailing. All those warning lights that were lighting up my dashboard like a disco are completely gone. The hill assist and other driver assistance systems are back to working exactly as they should. Trust me, I know the pain of seeing that repair bill, but it's definitely better to get it sorted properly rather than having it cause more expensive problems down the line. And it's such a relief not having to worry about the parking brake anymore!

Thanks for getting back to me about the costs. Just got mine fixed yesterday and thought I'd share how it went. The mechanic I found was actually great, really knew his stuff about BMWs. Turned out my issue was pretty much identical to yours, faulty actuator motors in the rear calipers. The total damage was a bit higher than yours, around 650€, since they had to replace both rear actuators. But honestly, I'm just relieved it's all sorted now. The car feels completely different, in a good way! All those warning lights are finally gone, and everything's working like it should. Had a bit of a scare when I was picking up the car because the brake warning light briefly came on, but the mechanic explained it was just part of the system reset. Been driving it for a day now, and it's running perfectly. Really glad I didn't wait any longer to get it fixed. Thanks again for helping me out with your experience, definitely made me feel better about getting it sorted!
