BMW M2 AC Complete Failure, Causes and Solutions

A/C System Not Engaging

|

Air conditioning blows warm air

Hey everyone, my 2022 BMW M2's AC system suddenly stopped working, no cold air at all and the system won't even turn on. Has anyone else dealt with this issue? Would love to hear what the problem was and how your mechanic fixed it. The car's running fine otherwise, just getting pretty uncomfortable without AC. Thanks in advance for any help!

Hey there! I'm a BMW owner with some experience working on cars, and I had a similar issue with my 2020 BMW M4. The AC completely died one day, just like yours. Took it to my regular workshop, and after diagnostics, they found faulty valves in the AC system. The repair bill hit about 1000 Euro, not fun, but it had to be done. They had to replace several valves and recharge the system. Now it's working perfectly again. Could you share some more details about your M2? Like the mileage and whether you've noticed any unusual sounds or smells before the AC stopped working? Also, did you check if the compressor kicks in when you turn on the AC? This info would help narrow down if you're dealing with the same issue I had.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My M2 just hit 167566 KM and had its latest service last month. Recently I've actually noticed a slight clicking sound when trying to turn on the AC, but I initially ignored it. No weird smells though. Tried checking if the compressor engages but honestly can't tell, might need more mechanical knowledge for that. Hoping it's not as expensive as your repair, but at least now I know what to expect when I take it to the workshop. The valves thing makes sense, especially since it just completely died rather than gradually getting worse.

Yeah that clicking sound you mentioned rings a bell! Had exactly the same thing on my M4 before the AC completely gave up. Based on what you're describing, it really does sound similar to what I experienced, especially that sudden death rather than a gradual decline. Just to share a bit more from my experience, when my mechanic dug deeper, they found that the clicking was actually the compressor trying to engage but failing. In my case, the faulty valves were preventing proper pressure regulation, which caused the system to protect itself by not engaging at all. Quick tip though, before you head to the workshop, check your fuses if you haven't already. I wasted some time worrying about expensive repairs when one of my AC fuses had blown. It's worth a look, even though given the clicking sound, I suspect you're dealing with something more serious like I did. Keep us posted on what your mechanic finds. Really hoping it's something simpler than what I dealt with. These M cars are amazing, but when something goes wrong, they sure know how to hit the wallet!

Thanks everyone, especially for the tip about checking the fuses first! I'll definitely give that a look before heading to the workshop, would be amazing if it turns out to be something that simple. Though given what you've shared about the clicking sound and compressor issues, I'm preparing myself mentally (and financially) for a more serious repair job. Really appreciate all the detailed info about the valve problems and what to expect. At least I won't be completely in the dark when talking to my mechanic now. I've actually booked an appointment for tomorrow morning, so I'll definitely update once I know what's going on. You're right about these M cars, absolutely love driving mine, but the repair costs can be pretty eye-watering! Better get this sorted quickly though, especially since I use the car daily. Thanks again for all the help!
